* [[VillainousValor On the other side of the battle lines]], you have the Eighteenth Dieron Regulars commanded by Brigadier General Dexter Kingsley. While they ''are'' an Elite-rated regiment, they are also from one of the line brigades of House Kurita, unlike the [[ElitesAreMoreGlamorous more prestigious and honoredSwords of Light, Genyosha, and Otomo bodyguards of the Cordinator]]. Yet, they successfully fight the equally Elite-rated Seventeenth Skye Rangers, Fourth Royal Guards, Third Crucis Lancers, First Royal Guards, and Third Davion Guards to a standstill at a minimum. The only reason they had to retreat from Altair was because of the insubordinate actions of the (nominally superior in quality and skill) Fifth Sword of Light's commander getting his unit destroyed by a Lyran ambush, and even then Dexter got his troops, including his 'lowly' supporting armor and infantry, off-world in good shape at 1:2 odds and a significant technological disadvantage. This is best summed up by an author's note written during the desperate (and successful) defense of Dieron:

* Theodore Kurita crushing the revanchist Black Dragon Society to prevent a resumption of the war that would doom the Draconis Combine. Even more significantly he invests in keeping the fragile peace with a mixture of pragmatism (he knows that the Combine is well behind the FedCom and a war will doom his people) and idealism (the peace gives him the chance to reform the brutal and harsh society before it destroys the Draconis Combine). Bonus points for starting the civil war at a 'tea party slash lessons learned briefing'!

** And then he beats Leo Showers who is half his age, in the prime of life, running a more technologically advanced and optimized Battlemech, and a Heroic-tier combatant (identical to Rhiannon Bruce, Justin Allard and Natasha Kerensky's skill levels!) in a '''brutal''' 1v1 duel at point-blank range. So not only does Grieg get his honor back, he wins a Warship for House Kurita and will be able to alert the Inner Sphere that the Clans are about to invade. Best summed up by this author's note (when you're so awesome that you break the plot of your author...).
-->AN: This is the one what Grieg really should not have won.

-->Garth Radick actually had marginally better skills than Grieg, and a slightly better 'mech. Still, the dice didn't have to go too crazy for him to win that.

-->The Fire Mandrill Star shouldn't have closed with him, Mediums rarely fare well against Assaults.

-->The Mandrill Khan had a better 'mech for long range combat, but slightly worse skills; that going either way wasn't all that surprising.

-->Hazen had him dead to rights in tactics, as well as a better 'mech, which should have more than compensated for him having a total of 107 skill modifiers to her 105 skill modifiers. It almost did.

-->Leo Showers though, Showers had the better 'mech, he optimized it better for his chosen engagement range, he had substantially better skill mods (fully in the Heroic tier), Showers should have won.

-->...Instead, he didn't even last as long as the Mandrill Khan, scarcely more than a quarter as long as Hazen, and he didn't inflict anywhere near as much damage as she did.

-->I had to replan a substantial chunk of the quest endgame because of this.

* Disgraced Warlord Galedon Grieg Samsonov becomes a truly epic SpannerInTheWorks for multiple factions (and the Quest author!) over the course of threads three to five as he successfully takes out an ISF kill team sent to punish him for his failure to deal with Wolf's Dragoons. Then he decides to get his honor back by spending ''twenty years'' pursuing the Dragoon's trail through the Deep Periphery into Clan Space, and manages to beat the Clans at their own game by challenging their leadership to a series of Trials of Grievance. After five wins (and one draw) against Warriors who are (mostly) decades younger and bred for single combat in technologically superior machines, Grieg regains his honor by humiliating the Crusader faction's leadership and returning with proof that the Dragoons are an invasion force. The level of respect he earns can best be summed up in this exchange after he defeats one of the two political leaders of the Crusader faction:
-->"A warrior who maintains fighting form for decades is a credit to their Clan and Blood Legacy," Showers cut back in, starting to march down towards floor of the Hall of Khans, "That they do so in spite of the ravages of age marks how exceptional they are. Did not the Great Father serve past a full century of life? Should we not aspire to so exceptional a career?"

-->None of the Khans had expected such words, and none replied, having learned some caution over the last few days. Leo could still feel their eyes burning into his back as he stood before Samsonov and removed his own ceremonial mask.

-->"I still lay a challenge before you," Showers declared, "Warlord Samsonov. I would have your service, from you and your people all the usable intelligence possible on the Inner Sphere. We have had little news and less reliable since the Dragoons went rogue."

-->"And what do I gain if I win this trial?" Samsonov demanded, "Forty-some tons of limited supplies are already being put to use in repairing my Battlemech. If you wish to defeat me in a war of attrition, be honest about it."

-->"If you win," Leo replied, smiling sharply at the Warlord, "My Clan will supply all necessary materials for all repairs to your Battlemech, any medical care you may need, and so that you stand to gain for your honor, a worthy transport for a Warlord.

-->"Should you defeat the Khan of the Smoke Jaguars, we will grant you the York-class Destroyer Lioness. If such a prize will not win you honor with your Khan upon your return, nothing will."
* The [=4RG=] manages to rout the Fifth Sword of Light in such a fashion that the Dieron Regulars suffered massive losses during the retreat, and a wedge was driven between the [=5SOL=] force commander and the district warlord as a result of his excessively aggressive stance that allowed Frederick Steiner and the Boys of Skye to divide and conquer their forces.

* Rhiannon's first true taste of war as a fully-trained and commissioned officer ends up being part of the 4th Royal Guards, and in her first engagement, she ends up making ''Triple Ace'' from all the ASF and Dropships she shoots down, and despite the truly terrifying amount of firepower directed at her Royal Stuka, she manages to break away and retreat to base. A pair of DCMS fighters attempt to finish her off, but she manages to outmanuver and take down one of them, terrifying the other into retreating. Her return to base, with the Stuka limping ''on one wing'' and with ''less armor than the piloting suit she wore'', end up cementing her callsign as 'Sephiroth'.

This quest, due to the choices of the player base and the dierolls, has managed to get several truly impressive outcomes:

* Rhiannon's uncle Thomas shows off by using his Highlander 90-ton assault battlemech to kill a dropship. ''In melee, during re-entry''. He successfully ejects to get clear of the impact, and the [=BattleROM=] records of that exchange becomes an impressive legend by itself as the "Biggest Highlander Burial in history". His opponent during this engagement, a DCMS mechwarrior named Akio, attempts (unsuccessfully) to stop Thomas, using his paper-thin little Jenner light mech. He, too, ejects and survives to be taken prisoner. Thanks to the choices of the players afterwards, Akio ends up ''defecting'' from the Combine and joining Rhiannon's entourage as a retainer in her Ducal Guard.

* In the lead-up to the preparations of the Royal Wedding between Hanse and Melissa, the jumpship that Rhiannon, Melissa, and several other trainees were taking over to the Federated Suns got ambushed at Thorin by the Combine. Despite losses, most of the trainees survive and Rhiannon ''makes Ace as a trainee'' as she joins in the defensive action.
