* When Erak announces that he'll be joining the crew of the ''Heron'' for this adventure, Hal stares him down and makes it clear that he, not the Oberjarl, will be giving the orders onboard. After a few seconds, Erak agrees.

** The sparring matches between Stig and Gilan and then Gilan and Thorn. For most of the first fight, the two combatants are pretty evenly matched; despite Gilan's edge in experience, it takes him a while to score a winning blow. Then he gets into a match with Thorn. The old warrior opens by dealing Gilan a blow that would have been incapacitating if he hadn't pulled it and closes by anticipating the trick Gilan successfully used against Stig and knocking his sword out of reach.

* Stig giving Olaf an ''epic'' TheReasonYouSuckSpeech, combined with CallingTheOldManOut, showing how he's matured. Olaf, who throughout the book has a NeverMyFault and ItsAllAboutMe mentality, is left speechless.

As he explains, Ulf and Wulf usually blame each other when they do anything, to be annoying, and Stefan looked too highly amused to assume he'd done nothing.

* When Karina (a small woman) gives Thorn (the former [[WorldsBestWarrior Maktig]]) a 'talking to' and Thorn goes from a drunken tramp to a shabby-but-scarily-competent figure who can legitimately serve as Hal's mentor. Lampshaded in-universe by Hal.
