** At the end of this book, Erak sends a message to the ruler he suspects of being behind the raid on Skandia, threatening to hurt him financially rather than simply launching an assault as he would have done once upon a time, and ensuring that another politician takes charge of the effort to reverse the smear campaign performed against Skandia. Halt would be proud.

** The sparring matches between Stig and Gilan and then Gilan and Thorn. For most of the first fight, the two combatants are pretty evenly matched; despite Gilan's edge in experience, it takes him a while to score a winning blow. Then he gets into a match with Thorn. The old warrior opens by dealing Gilan a blow that would have been incapacitating if he hadn't pulled it and closes by anticipating the trick Gilan successfully used against Stig and knocking his sword out of reach.

It's also an awesome moment for Gilan, however, in that he goes toe-to-toe with the Heron's two best warriors (while onboard ship, meaning that the deck is constantly shifting underneath him, which he isn't as used to as they are) and gives an excellent account of himself both times.

* ''Slaves of Socorro'': A non-action example. Hal orders Ingvar to throw anyone into the water who keeps saying certain words (messing with the crew). Soon after, Ulf or Wulf pipes up again. However, both insist they're innocent. Hal looks and thinks for a few minutes -- and tells Ingvar to throw ''[[VoiceChangeling Stefan]]'' in instead. As he explains, Ulf and Wulf usually blame each other when they do anything, to be annoying, and Stefan looked too highly amused to assume he'd done nothing.
