* GenericCuteness: The boys tend to fall under two categories: rounded "cute" face (Kouta, Ryo, and Yuu), or jagged "handsome" face (Shunsuke and Seiichirou). This gets especially noticeable when Macchi complains about pretty boys (specifically Yuu) in episode 1: due to the show's shoujo aesthetic, the only difference the two have is in hairstyle.

* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Kouta's shame at liking Pompompurin, his envy and confusion at Yuu and Shun being so open about their love for Sanrio characters, and Yuu encouraging Kouta that it's okay to "like what he likes", can easily read as a ComingOutStory. This gets especially prominent when you pair this with earlier scenes of one of Kouta's friends loudly complaining about not having a girlfriend and taking the trio on a group outing to find one.

The original blog promoted the products, so yes, it was product placement for the blog.

* MerchandiseDriven: Downplayed. Yes, there's Sanrio merch all over the place in this series, but the show focuses more on what the goods represent to the boys than just using them for product placement. This is just as true as it is in the original web incarnation, but it's really brought out here.

Kouta Hasegawa, 17 years old, is a second-year high school student who hides a secret: he is incredibly fond of Pompompurin, or he was until the other kids started to mock him over it, leading Kouta's relationship with his grandma to crumble. Sadly, he never mended his bond with his grandmother, and she died before he could muster up the strength to apologize to her. Now, his days are empty and he has little to look forward to. All of this changes when he accidentally finds a cutesy My Melody trinket belonging to Yuu Mizuno, and fails to gather the courage to publicly return it to him, fearing that if he did that, Yuu would be mocked about it like Kouta himself was. Much to his shock, Yuu isn't afraid to admit liking My Melody. Slowly, Kouta begins to bond with his fellow cuteness fans at school, gradually learning to accept himself and being open about the things he likes.

In fact, all the boys love their Sanrio reps, they just hide it from others most of the time due to fear of ridicule or other personal reasons. The story isn't so much "Real Men Wear Pink", rather than "Real Men Should Wear Their Pink Loud".
