It serves as the second half of the dual anime project announced in 2015, the first half being 2016's ''Anime/ToukenRanbuHanamaru''. The series premiered on July 1st, 2017 as part of the Summer2017Anime lineup.

While some of the targets the Touken Danshi have to protect are indeed historical figures, and they do run into a couple occasionally, some of their missions involve protecting areas that have nothing to do with them, such as making sure a castle town doesn't burn down all the way or helping rescue survivors of a trade ship explosion.
