Sakaido awakes one day to find himself in a mysterious room... where his body immediately starts to mysteriously [[BodyHorror fall apart]]. After literally putting himself together, he realizes that he has amnesia: all that he can remember is his name, that he needs to investigate the murder of a girl named Kaeru, and that he is a [[GreatDetective brilliant detective]].

Cut to the police investigation team who are watching him through a mysterious system called the Mizuhanome, which allows people to dive into the minds of murderers and uses their [[MentalWorld mindscape]] as well as Kaeru as an impetus to find information in order to solve crimes. Sakaido, whose real name is Akihito Narihisago, is a former police officer who is paying his penance by diving into [[MentalWorld Wells]] for a special division of the police.

* FloatingLimbs: Narihisago inside Fukuda's Well caused him to gain this. Because Fukuda's mind was fragmented, this also affected Narihisago, who started out as floating chunks of his body before refitting himself back to normal except for his left elbow, making a floating gap in his left arm. This actually becomes helpful in him solving the first case because he can detach his left forearm and hand to extend and reach for objects that he needs to use for the case like floating platforms and such. However, this remains exclusively for the first case as Narihisago is later seen to remain whole in other people's Wells because they weren't fragmented like Fukuda's was.
