* EarlyInstallmentWeirdness: This is the first official appearance of the Super Saiyan, and has black hair with a red aura instead of the now famous GoldenSuperMode. How much Toei was aware of Toriyama's future plans isn't clear, but the legend of the "Super Saiyan" had been mentioned repeatedly throughout the early and mid Namek Saga, so it's possible they were forming their own idea of what such a form would look like. The transformation is called "False Super Saiyan" or "Fake Super Saiyan" when mentioned in later media such as guide books.
** Other speculation suggests that this was the original look for Super Saiyans until Toriyama decided not to ink Super Saiyan hair when it came time for it to be formally introduced in the manga.

* GenericDoomsdayVillain: Lord Slug is one of the worst offenders of all the movie villains. He doesn't have any more depth than your run-on-the-mill villain, as not even his backstory is that explored in detail in supplementary material. If one takes only this movie as fact, he is just some space pirate that wants to terrafreeze the planet ''because'', and is a Namekian. Even his plan is bizarrely one-note: Slug goes from planet to planet, looting and freezing them just so he can use it as a ship to go to the ''next'' planet to do the same thing, ad infinitum.

* DubInducedPlotlineChange: The Funimation dub completely changes Lord Slug's backstory.
** The original Japanese dub states that he had a similar backstory to the Nameless Namekian, having been sent off the original Planet Namek as a baby to escape the natural disasters that happened there. His great power as a Super Namekian is due to him being a mutant, which also made it so he could be nothing but pure evil.
** In the Funimation dub, he was raised on the original Planet Namek for a while before it got hit by several natural disasters. On his time there, he and several other Namekians unlocked a higher state of being and became "Super Nameks". However, they became [[DrunkOnTheDarkSide intoxicated on their newfound power]], and the other Namekians used their Dragon Balls to banish them from the planet. Since then, they've become nomadic space pirates, constantly pillaging planets. Slug himself is possibly the last of these Super Nameks.

* CanonDiscontinuity: As par for the course with the pre-''Battle of Gods'' ''Z'' movies, which are considered [[NonSerialMovie Non-Serial Movies]]. ''Daizenshuu 6'' states that it would take place around the fight against Frieza on Namek, between Goku's arrival and his transformation, obviously preventing this movie from being canon due to the fact that none of the cast knows Instant Transmission at this point. Barring that, while Krillin, Goku, and Gohan being alive would seem to point to this movie taking place between the end of the Saiyan Saga and when Krillin, Gohan, and Bulma left for Namek, Piccolo is shown to be alive, despite the fact that at he was dead until near the middle of the Namek saga; additionally, Goku can't turn Super Saiyan (despite the title, he only goes into a Super Saiyan-like state near the end), King Kai states that even Frieza ''can't'' defeat him (suggesting that he's still alive; were he dead, he would've said Frieza ''couldn't'' defeat Lord Slug). and Lord Slug's plan hinges on terraforming the entire Earth into a frozen wasteland, despite Namek being shown as filled with forests and relatively warm. Additionally, there's a flashback to ''Anime/DragonBallZTheTreeOfMight'', which itself is non canon due to it taking place when everyone should be on Namek, which further prevents this movie from being canon.
