Working Title: Affecting real life demand: From YKTTW

Earnest: I so want to caption the pic "My Precious..." but fear I would be stoned to death for it. ^_^;

Medinoc: I'm not sure Encyclopedia Dramatica is the best link for Nevada-tan... Wouldn't Wikipedia suffice ? GagHalfrunt: I've changed the Nevada-tan link to Wikipedia.
Nobodymuch: I've heard that there were girls named Anesthesia after it was well-publicised that Queen Victoria had used it to ease a childbirth. Not that I'm sure that's relevant.
The Contact example made me wonder- does this trope cover intentional examples, or only unintentional ones?
  • How did this trope get so long before anyone mentioned E.T. and Reese's Pieces? It's one of the very rare examples where this did, in fact, lead to a permanent increase in sales, since Reese's Pieces weren't that popular before the movie came out. However, when M&M Mars turned down the deal to advertise M&M's in the movie at the last moment, Hershey gladly picked it up to advertise their candies in M&M's spot. The rest is history.

Paul A: How did this trope get so long before anyone mentioned E.T. and Reese's Pieces? Well, it might have something to do with deliberate Product Placement being a separate trope...

Anonymous Mc Cartneyfan: Cut this and put it here for being inaccurate. The Wonka chocolate bars did reach stores briefly; unfortunately, since the film was mostly Vindicated by Cable, they didn't stay past 1971. But non-chocolate Wonka-branded items (being somewhat less expensive and less perishable) did stay on shelves, and the brand is still active. Next time you pick up a box of Nerds or some Laffy Taffy, take a peek at who makes it.

  • And then didn't. The candy never made it to stores.

Duckay: Cutting:

  • The name "Wendy" was likewise invented by James Barrie in Peter Pan.

and

The former based on the above discussion about Peter Pan, and the latter because of Conversation On The Main Page and, besides, the name Isabella has been on the rise for years, as noted by the second reply. If you see something wrong, guys, just cut it, don't point out on the main page how they are wrong. (Later: The Peter Pan discussion was on the Defictionalization Discussion page, not The Red Stapler Discussion, but the point still stands; http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mpeterpanwendy.html discusses the point. The name was not invented by Barrie.)
