I have a question about this entry:
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: No callbacks are made to Thousand Year Door despite the fact that it had origami transformations.
I don't think so, since TTYD elements weren't introduced in the first place.
Yes. Wasted means "the plot was there but underutilized", not just "it would have been cool if..."
Edited by Ferot_Dreadnaught^Well, you already got rid of it for me, but thanks!
"Unite GUN/BAZOOKA/LAUNCHER/TANK!"Should there be an entry for Narm regarding the titular Origami King? I've seen quite a few people who find Ollys motivation (that being drawn on by his creator is the reason he wants to kill all Toads in existence) pathetic.
"I know we'll make it cause somehow, the universe is fun now!" ~Sana Hide / Show RepliesI didn't mean to imply that I'm bashing the character, more-so that the character's motivation just seems like a flimsy, not well written plot point.
"I know we'll make it cause somehow, the universe is fun now!" ~SanaI think it was meant to be not entirely serious, like bathos where the characters treat it seriously but to us it's kinda silly.
The Protomen enhanced my life.Is there a reason why the nightmare fuel page for this game was removed and delegated to the folder page for the entire franchise?
C.A Hide / Show RepliesThere should have been a redirect created to point to the franchise Nightmare Fuel page.
Edited by Albert3105I would like to add the trope “Even Better Sequel”. Origami King has gotten great reviews with nearly all of them saying it’s vastly superior to Sticker Star and Color Splash. Some even say it’s as good as Thousand Year Old Door. So would this be an accurate trope to add here?
Hide / Show RepliesI'd say even if it would apply, it would be Surprisingly Improved Sequel since peoples' expectations have been fairly low with the Paper Mario series trending downward.
Found a Youtube Channel with political stances you want to share? Hop on over to this page and add them.Color Splash itself was seen as a Surprisingly Improved Sequel to Sticker Star, so maybe hold off a bit until opinions finalize further.
The Protomen enhanced my life.Do you agree with this entry after the 2 month rule expires?
- Harsher in Hindsight: King Olly the game's villain has a ulterior motive, to essentially commit genocide on all Toads because one wronged him and they "all look the same". Needless to say this writing choice hasn't gone down well with gamers who merely voiced their complaints about Color Splash having no character diversity compared to earlier titles in the series, where all potential NPCs taken up by generic Toads that all looked the same everywhere.
I didn't know spoiler tags don't work in discussions, you learn something everyday.
But ironically, don't much more than Toads appear as species in-game?
Sticker Star had the Toad overabundance, not Color Splash, and CS had many Toads in different outfits and with more distinct personalities as well as varying NPC species.
Edited by lalalei2001 The Protomen enhanced my life.Sticker Star as well. This worries me that people are pointing this out online. Criticism isn't the same thing as "universal condemnation". When done constructively it's meant to keep us in check, identify our shortcomings and ultimately improve upon the last game. Not beget bitterness/backlash. This is highly likely to be Intelligent Systems doing, not Nintendo's. From past experience the Big N has always been indifferent - maintaining an apolitical stance, not responding directly to criticism nor controversy from the fans, well, not in this fashion, not in the public domain anyway.
Harsher in Hindsight only applies to works prior to what caused the hindsight, it's misused on this page.
I also have a few possible tropes related to comparison, for after the time barrier expires.
- Author's Saving Throw: Origami King makes even more of an effort to clean up the criticisms of the previous modern Paper Mario games.
- Unlike Sticker Star and Color Splash, there are more original characters with both actual names and unique designs beyond the helper. This point is especially impressive, considering an interview released before the game revealed the restrictions were even worse than previously thought.
- Color Splash tried to have it both ways with the main villain, having Bowser be possessed, yet acting wishywashy on letting his possessor be explicitly identified, failing to go into any detail on the lore behind it, and even trying to sweep it under the rug during and especially after the final battle comes. Origami King addresses this bigtime, with the titular character, King Olly, appearing front and center from the very first trailer, while Bowser himself is incapacitated from the start of the game. Olly’s backstory is also delved into, giving more gravitas and understanding to his character.
- The basic Jump and Hammer attacks are now infinite use like the classic games. While the stronger variants are limited, a single piece of such can now be used multiple times before consumption.
- Players can now see the damage Mario deals on enemies again numerically to allow for more accurate attack choices, after Color Splash bizarrely removed this basic feature for an unreliable color-draining bar for the enemies.
- The nature of the circle ring system essentially allows Mario to choose targets on his turn in battle again to some extent, as the previous two games took the feature away for ultimately misguided reason.
- Bosses no longer require Things, especially as most of them technically are Things themselves. This time, all boss weaknesses are in the fight itself, with no external items required beforehand. It also doubles as a Catharthis Factor, allowing players’ frustrated with the Things system to finally get revenge.
- Character Rerailment: In the previous two Paper Mario games, Kamek wasn’t quite himself. He acted more sinister, slow and manipulative akin to someone like [[Disney/Aladdin Jafar]], while sidelining his loyalty to Bowser, making him look uncaring of Bowser as a result. Origami King rectifies this, portraying Kamek much closer to his manically beleaguered yet loyal caretaker persona from every other Super Mario game.
SS/CS Kamek was pretty loyal to Bowser, especially in Sticker Star, so I don't think that would apply. I haven't seen that kind of criticism of Color Splash's villain at all, with many considering it a highlight of the game, while Olly's villainy and especially his motive have been deemed silly or too edgy. We definitely need to wait for a consensus for the general fandom.

I have to greatly disagree on Bobby’s Broken Base being removed simply because another trope is there. That doesn’t even make a single lick of sense. Half the purpose for this wiki is singular subjects being able to have more than one trope associated with them. Even before and during release, people were split on him being generic. As of late, I’ve seen other people across the net see the cracks in his characterization and the agenda behind him more and more. So to outright deny and/ or downplay the Broken Base mileage varying behind him is dishonest. And by this logic, I should have deleted the Ensemble Darkhorse trope. There’s no valid, legitimate reason either both tropes can’t be on the page, or even Base-Breaking Character alone as a compromise.
