I don't think Jaws would qualify as a sleeper hit at all. The film was released with one of the biggest advertising campaigns for a film at that time - to quote the other Wiki, "Universal spent $1.8 million promoting Jaws, including an unprecedented $700,000 on national television spot advertising" - Universal was clearly expecting the film to be a hit, and it set the opening weekend box office record to boot, so it didn't have the slow, word-of-mouth driven success that typically defines a sleeper hit.
Hide / Show RepliesGood call. It had a Troubled Production, sure, but the reason they went so hard for it was because it was thought that it'd be a huge hit. There's a reason the movie is considered the original summer blockbuster.

(it's been a long while since I checked YKTTW -.-) would Unreal Tournament count on this? It started as just an Expansion Pack for Unreal. I don't know it's whole development history, aside of an article on IGN about the Unreal Engine.
i'm pretty sure Rascal Does Not Dream Of A Bunny Girl Senpai qualifies as a Sleeper Hit, everybody expected it to be an Ecchi Harem instead of the emotional rollercoaster we got
