"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanDoes this look fine, or did I make any formatting mistakes? ~ JR
Hide / Show RepliesHi there, and welcome to TV Tropes!
You've made a really good effort with this page and the content is generally fine. However, yeah, there are formatting errors. I've created a page at Sandbox.Voltuh so you can see how to fix all of them, and I'll also give some explanation here. The full guide can be found on the Text-Formatting Rules.
Wiki links
There are a couple different ways to make links, so I know it can be confusing. The most common way is by writing a WikiWord: "AnAdventurerIsYou" becomes "An Adventurer Is You" — each separate word begins with a capital letter. No brackets or braces are needed for this.
The second way to make links is using braces: "Hello" becomes "Hello". This is used when the page you want to link to is one word long. You only need to write the word once, not twice.
The third way is to use either of these to make a Pot Hole. Pot holes use brackets, like this: "wiki word example" and "Hello braces example" become "wiki word example" and "braces example". This allows you to make the display text different from the link underneath. You shouldn't do this when listing tropes — only when you're writing a link in the middle of a sentence.
Folders
Folders are used to split up long pages. You've got the formatting down perfectly — the only issue is that this page doesn't need any because it's not long enough for them. Do remember that if a page is split by letters of the alphabet, a separate folder is not needed for each letter; see The Hobbit for an example.
Trope lists
Each line must start off with a * which makes a bullet point. Then write a trope name, either as a WikiWord or using braces. Straight after that — no space in between — comes a colon and then a space and finally the description of how the trope is used. You can see examples on the sandbox page I linked above.
Always check that the page you want to link to actually exists; if not, the link will be red. Tropes which don't exist, e.g. Xenophile and Backstabber, shouldn't be listed in the trope list.
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.Thank you very much, that is extremely useful. I think I have fixed most of the mistakes. I am still not sure why the name Mc Cleaver always becomes a link?
The reason I used Folders is because I have added less than 20% of the tropes for the first 10 strips, and less than 2% of the tropes for the first 100 strips.
I'll remove the spaces now.
I thought Xenophile was a trope? I know Backstabber is a sub-trope of An Adventurer Is You. What's the best way to handle this?
Thanks again for the advice, you saved me a lot of headaches. I just wish I had seen it before my last round of edits.
Edited by 8.25.226.66You're welcome. The page looks very sleek now — good work!
"Mc Cleaver" is written AllMashedUpLikeAWikiWord, so the system thinks that it should be a link. To stop this happening, use the [=escape sequence=] like so: [=McCleaver=] becomes McCleaver.
Oh, fair enough. It might be good to leave them out for now and add them again later when the rest of the tropes are added, but that's up to you.
Just because something is listed as a sub-trope doesn't mean it's a trope with its own page. You can talk about sub-types in the An Adventurer Is You section, but the subtypes can't have their own entries because they're all redlinks, like so: Backstabber.
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going. All red links are now fixed. I'm going to take a break and then add around 20 more tropes.
How do I make sure this appears on all the correct indexes?
