Honestly the metal DDR pad is debatable. Most of the professional players I know swear by metal pads; almost none of them use a soft pad. A metal pad might not be worth getting for those who just want to play DDR/In the Groove casually, but is pretty much mandatory for someone who wants to play at the levels of, say, Konami Arcade Championship finalists.
