It could be informative, and at least one series that i know of (Gantz) specifically invoked the trope by one character pointing out that a new enemy that appeared must be the final boss of that \\\"level\\\" of the game. There would be plenty of examples of non-video game final bosses that take place both in and out of in-universe video games (compare Sword Art Online, for example, with Man of Steel--the former has a literal in-universe video game final boss while the latter has a figurative final boss in Zod)
