The TVTropes Trope Finder is where you can come to ask questions like "Do we have this one?" and "What's the trope about...?" Trying to rediscover a long lost show or other medium but need a little help? Head to Media Finder and try your luck there. Want to propose a new trope? Find a Trope:
openNot in the Original Moment Film
Sometimes in dubbed films, a line of dialogue is very different to the original line or added when it wasn't present in the original. One example is the Russian dub of Kung Fu Panda 2 which features Russian Po saying "Oh nyet" (Oh no) before being thrown onto a conveyor belt leading to lava by Shen.
openDid you miss me? Film
One character, usually a supporting character, hasn't been seen for a while. They're either missing, presumed dead, or otherwise unavailable. Then, usually near the end of the story, they come back to reunite with the other characters, and we often hear them before we see them. They might say something obvious like "Did you miss me?" or something more specific to the context. Crucially, what they say isn't very important, so as not to distract from the dramatic impact of them showing up. In film and TV, this is often emphasized by a rack focus shot toward the character in question. This trope has a lot of overlap with the deus ex machina, but is not necessarily the same thing.
openNo need to act through the phone Film
A scene that reveals a Twist - Bob recieves a call from Alice, who sounds like she's feeling one thing (scared, in love, friendly). Then we cut to Alice's side of the conversation, and she's acting cold and unemotional. It becomes clear she's lying to Bob about her feelings, and since they're on the phone, she doesn't need to fake the facial expressions to sell the lie.
It feels like it doesn't make much sense to me - if someone's pretending to be crying, even on the phone, they'd probably be making the facial expressions regardless - it'd be harder to act by only changing her's voice, but not her physicality. Especially if she's used to lying in person to begin with.
openFan with strings on them to show when the air is flowing Film
So in visual medias, you very often have little strings of fabric or paper attached to the blades of fans, vents, etc. Presumably the purpose is to show when they're running (and starting/stopping, although in some cases the fan is just on and this doesn't seem to be relevant in any way), but naturally nobody randomly attaches stuff to their fans in real life, so it's a bit jarring. Is there a trope for that?
openRemember the bounty hunter in Ord Mantell? Film
When characters refer to an offscreen event, that is never explained, they are very familiar with but we are completely in the dark. The first mention of the Clone Wars was this. Not exactly Shrouded in Myth, sometimes they are offhand jokes like: "We saved you in World War II !!" "Yeah, well,we saved YOU in World War III!!!"
openEverything Montage Film
A montage that covers either the entire history of the universe, just Earth, or just humanity. Usually starts with a slower scene of the big bang, then progresses faster and faster showing short scenes or stills of Earth on different eras, hominids, human beings in different ages of human history, 20th Century film clips, ending with a aerial shot of a large city representing present time.
Usually, if a character becomes omniscient (or like some sort of AI absorbs all of human knowledge from the internet), this montage will represent what's going on in their thoughts.
openOut of order scene filming Film
A scene at the end of the film is the first scene to be shot.
Edited by jordanar21openRomantic Comedy - Sincere advice from Comic Relief Film
Is there a trope for when a comic relief character in a Romantic Comedy, maybe one of the protagonist's Amazingly Embarrassing Parents, stops being Played for Laughs and gives the protagonist an earnest bit of insight/advice about romantic love that's relevant to their relationship with their love interest. Like in Friends with Benefits where Mila Kunis' mom stops joking about not being able to remember the identity of Mila's father and says that her dad was the only man she ever truly loved?
openLong emotional scene Film
Hi,
I'm looking for movies that have an long emotional scene. No dialogue, preferably camera just zooming in on the maincharacter going through a number of emotions. One example is Shawhank redemption, when Tim Robbins exits the sewer at the end, takes of his shirt and screams to the sky.
thanks,
openColored lights during a song Film
During musical movies, during a song, all of a sudden lights are turning different colors as if it were a real musical. Think of Changing Lives or It's Not About Me from "The Prom". Blue and purple dietetic lights appear.
resolved Bow = Gun Film
Is there a trope about bow and arrow users behaving like gun users? Either as a source of comedy, or because the writer Did Not Do The Research and assumes the two weapons are similar enough they can cross out gun and replace it with bow if he's setting the story far enough into the past.
openReclusive Hero Film
A main or supporting character is very private about their private life amongst their peers, to the point where those around them — including those close to them — know almost nothing about them.
Not sure if Hidden Depths could work.
Edited by Henshin4LifeopenSubverted indulgences Film
A character or place that seemingly satisfies a character's obsessions, but ends up being a trap instead. An example is Club Vandersexxx in Euro Trip, which poses as an ordinary brothel but turns out to be a BDSM dungeon with tons of Loophole Abuse such as the safeword being deliberately unpronounceable.
openThe Dark Middle Chapter Film
What’s the trope name for the dark middle chapter in a story, most typically the penultimate entry in a trilogy having somewhat of a downer ending a la Empire Strikes Back.
Sometimes the slightly/moderately changed dialogue created by dubs can be superior to the original lines. For example in The Amazing Digital Circus Pilot there's a funny moment where Bubble cleans Pomni's vomit with his tongue and Caine replies with "Why are you like this". But in Ukrainian it's even better as the line instead is "Evolution has passed you by".
