A thread offering assistance and support for tropers covering DC's many, many stories and characters.

This includes the shared DC Universe, but not the cultural Warner Bros. juggernaut known as the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). One of our aims is to disentangle tropes and characters from the DCEU adaptations from pages about their source material.

This scope does cover DC comic, manga and webcomic stories, characters and tropes that are unconnected to that shared DC Universe - their various licensed stories.

The sheer scale of this means that there's so much material (with dozens of new comics added each week) that no one troper is likely to own or read all of it - especially as there are big gaps in what's available digitally or reprinted (and licensed characters and legal issues mean that certain stories may never be reprinted at all).

And that can make troping their shared universe pretty tricky - even DC's own creative teams have been known to lose track now and then.

We've got tropers busily revising existing pages, while others add new information weekly as new comics are published. This thread's here to help with any queries that generates, to focus work on particular pages that could use improvement, and to help ensure that we tackle works page names and other aspects in a consistent way that makes sense to readers navigating between different DC-related pages (as well as following best practice for the wiki as a whole).

Feel free to post here to draw attention to relevant posts or threads elsewhere - e.g. if examples, images, captions and quotes, or spoiler policies for these pages are under discussion.

There are existing threads and standard guidelines for those topics (e.g. Image Pickin' has its own, very structured, process), and this shouldn't duplicate any of that - but tropers reading this thread may wish to vote or comment once they know about those discussions.

    Comic Book page guidance
  • If there's a consistent creative team, they should be named in the introduction. Ideally, include inkers and colorists as well as other artists.
  • The page image doesn't always have to be the first issue cover.
  • Pages for arcs, runs and events should include the relevant titles and issue numbers.
  • Pages should include start and end dates in the introduction
  • Links regarding particular characters (e.g. Batman) should go to their Characters page, not their Comic Book page.

    Character page guidance
  • As a rule, characters in DC continuity only get one Character page profile, regardless of how many different series they appear in. However:
  • Alternate Universe and Bad Future variants may justify their own profile, and sometimes the same can be said for Split Personality scenarios.
  • It may be appropriate to add a character to a relevant Character page with an intro and a link to their full profile on another page (e.g. many villains have been major characters in several different series)
  • Creation of any new Character Specific Pages, and proposals to merge any of them back into other pages, should go via the Character Specific Pages cleanup thread, but it's worth posting here as well.
  • If you're splitting, merging or moving characters between different Character pages, it's worth checking with the Character Page Cleanup thread as well as posting here.

Anyways, to start, I'd like to propose changing the characters sub headings to all be "DC Comics", as that would make things easier to link to.

I'd also like to propose migrating the pages that have a initiative subheading "New 52, Rebirth, Infinite Frontier, Dawn of DC" to either year or author. The infinite frontier pages are going to be tricker as they were just rebrandings not relaunches so I'm not completely sure what to do about them but i've listing them anyway just for a starting draft idea.

I'm broadly in favour of standardising the character prefixes. We aren't always consistent on this within a franchise, but we've been heading that way on Marvel, Star Wars etc. for a while.

We can always take it to a Crowner if we need a formal consensus.

Yeah I guess. Although since the thread is still new I’m not sure how much traction there would be atm. Although I also don’t want there to be a bunch of pushback afterwards.

[up]Also do you think you could pin the first post for me please?

Justice League (Infinite Frontier) and The Flash (Infinite Frontier) shouldn't be moved to (2021) imo, because the way the years between parenthesis are used in comic book parlance, misleadingly makes them look like relaunchs when they're just new runs with the previous numbering. If we move them out of (Infinite Frontier), I'd suggest going by the runs' writer. So Justice League Brian Michael Bendis and The Flash Jeremy Adams. Main problem is that the final issue of each got other writers. Flash's is easier to solve, as it's only three backup stories, Adams still writes the leading story. Justice League's is more complicated though as #75 is by another writer completely.

ETA: Same goes for Batman/Superman, although that one is all by Gene Luen Yang, so it can probably me moved more easily to Batman Superman Gene Luen Yang

The Flash (Dawn of DC) shouldn't be moved to The Flash 2023 as that would conflict with the movie. If it's moved anywhere else it should be The Flash Simon Spurrier

ETA: About the character moves, Supergirl's shouldn't be moved to Kara Zor-El as it has tropes for some of the Supergirl's that aren't Kara.

[up]Ok so regarding Supergirl I looked it over and your right. There are multiple versions of the character. Although Kara Zor-El by herself is over 80,000 bytes, so she could be split off into a solo page. Other than that I don't see any other conflictions or objections.

Regarding the page names, regarding runs set during the same volume, I would say yes to going by writer. Make it similar to The Amazing Spider-Man (1963) and The Amazing Spider-Man (Lee & Ditko).

Other than that I I'm going to try and get the thread a little more traction by posting on the character-specific page but other than that I think we may be good to go for the character moves at least. I'm not sure where to go for more views on the comic renames though.

It was suggested that I mention this here. The page for Guardian is set up to look more like a character page that a comic book page. It basically focuses entirely on the different versions of the character and all the appearances he has made. What should we do?

I was cleaning video examples on Franchise.Batman and found that some redirects/moved ComicBook/ to Characters/ pages still have some orphaned subpages remaining. My latest video moderation request is pending to be fulfilled but here are the subpages I've found:

Comic Book/ redirects with orphaned subpages

Some special cases:

I'm listing these for future reference/if someone else wants to help.

I'm under the assumption that these should be moved to an appropriate work subpage where the character probably applies. Otherwise, would Franchise.Batman subpages be the final resort?

[up]Ok sorry for the late reply ~Black Faith Star. Abandoned sub-pages like those should have been moved over or redirected a long time ago as a part of this clean-up project. If anyone finds those, just merge the contents into the parent pages.

On a unrelated note, I have put in a request for the New 52, Rebirth, Infinite Frontier, and Dawn of DC comic book pages to be moved over. I agreed with the Infinite Frontier pages being done by writer so I changed it to be done for that.

Edit: Here is the full list I requested.

Hi. It seems the Aquaman page has been split into Aquaman (New 52) and Aquaman (Rebirth). I would like to add the following to the pages' descriptions, if that's okay:

    Aquaman New 52
In 2013, the series was part of a Bat Family Crossover with Justice League (2011), also written by Geoff Johns. The event, called Throne of Atlantis, received a loose animated adaptation in 2015. Elements from this arc also served as the basis for Aquaman (2018), which featured many characters introduced during the New 52 run.

Johns left the book after the twenty-fifth issue, as he shifted his attention to writing Forever Evil (2013) and Batman: Earth One. He would be succeeded by Jeff Parker (issues #26-40), Cullen Bunn (#41-47) and Dan Abnett (#48-53).

The New 52 run ended on issue #53, though it was immediately followed up by Aquaman (Rebirth), with Abnett still on writing duty.

    Aquaman Rebirth
Aquaman is a 2016 comic book (...) DC Rebirth relaunch.

The series is a direct continuation of Dan Abnett's New 52 run, dealing with Aquaman's struggles as he tries to conciliate his duties as a king with his activities as a superhero. The politics within the kingdom of Atlantis are notably the driving force for most of the plot, with the Atlanteans' centuries-long xenophobia and social apartheid contributing to growing tensions not only with the surface world, but among themselves.

In the first arc, the King of the Seas wants to bring peace to the surface and undersea worlds, but has to deal with the return of Black Manta, who takes over the secret society N.E.M.O. and plans to use its assets to instigate a war between Atlantis and the rest of the planet. This is further complicated by the actions of the Deluge, an Atlantean terrorist organization who intends to dethrone Aquaman at all costs, eventually plunging the kingdom into a civil war.

Aquaman's bride, Mera, would see a rise in prominence later in the run, eventually becoming the protagonist of her own mini-series, titled "Mera: Queen of Atlantis". Said series follows the heroine's adventures in the context of the Atlantean civil war, and also features the return of major antagonist Ocean Master, making his first appearance after a five years long absence.

Abnett's run ended in the forty-first issue, which was a tie-in to Drowned Earth, a Bat Family Crossover with Justice League (2018). He was succeeded by Kelly Sue DeConnick.

DeConnick's run was marked by an attempt to approximate the comics to the DC Extended Universe, most notably by having Aquaman receive tattoos that resembled the ones sported by his film counterpart. She also expanded on the series' mythology by introducing the Sea Gods, Aquaman's new allies who hail from various pantheons. Additionally, Jackson Hyde (Black Manta's son) and Andy Curry (Aquaman and Mera's daughter) finally join the cast after much Foreshadowing in earlier chapters of DC Rebirth.

The book was cancelled in the sixty-fifth issue, which hastily wrapped-up lingering plotlines and concluded the series with Aquaman and Mera's wedding.

So Batman (The Character) has been moved over to Batman: Bruce Wayne, with the previous page turned into an index. The plan is to do the same for Superman and Wonder Woman, but I'm having a hard time trying to figure out their succession lists. I've got the following:

Superman

Wonder Woman

Any help clarifying the succession lists would be appreciated.

Should World's Finest (1941) be moved to Worlds Finest? There are no conflicting pages, so I don't think it needs to be under a disambiguation.

PoorlyDisguisedPilot.Showcase is a subpage without an associated work page. Given that the nature of Showcase itself may preclude it from getting a page, should it become a generic DC Comics page?

[up][up]I just feel unless other comics under the title are published, as the original title it could probably stand to not have a disambiguation. It could stand like Action Comics, Detective Comics, and Sensation Comics.

[up]I did a little bit of finangling, and launched ComicBook.Showcase. I added in all the info from PoorlyDisguisedPilot.Showcase as general info under a folder, and re-explained the general trope. The page can be used for any of the characters that never got a comic who were showcased there. It will need a bit of work. I can try and find some more tropes to crosswick.
