YMMV / X-Men: Deadly Genesis

• Base-Breaking Character: Vulcan aka Gabriel Summers. For some fans, he is the worst part in a story which adds unneeded darkness to Xavier's character, and is too whiny and obnoxious to be taken seriously all the while being boringly and unimaginatively powerful. To others, he made up for this in his depiction in Emperor Vulcan, The Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire and War of Kings.
• Fanon Discontinuity: Many fans were not pleased about the retcon of a secret, unknown X-Men team whose existence was removed from Scott's memory and would very much like to pretend this story does not exist.
• It Was His Sled: Vulcan is the third Summers brother and was part of a secret team of X-Men whose existence was hidden from the X-Men by Charles Xavier.
• The Woobie: All four members of the Second Genesis team.
  • Sway's parents were killed by gangbangers and despite her powers manifesting she was unable to save them. She also dies on the mission to Krakoa.
  • Petra's parents died in a rock slide seemingly caused by her powers. Her foster father tried to molest her, resulting in her running away and living on the streets before Moira found her. Like Sway, she too ends up dead on the mission to Krakoa.
  • Darwin's father left him and his mom when Darwin was a child because he refused to believe Darwin was his child. Darwin's mother blamed him for this and sent him to the Biltmore Academy for Advanced Education so he wouldn't be in the house with her. When she found out he was a mutant she rejected him.
  • Gabriel was raised as a slave to the Shi'ar who also murdered his mother when he was an infant. He saw two of his friends die and then Xavier erased memories of them from the other X-Men.
