  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • There's a lot of this, both In-Universe and out, concerning Shuichiro Sawaki, namely with him either being a Nice Guy or a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing.
      • The degree of his involvement in Koito's suicide. Is he really innocent bystander in it, or did he do something, directly or indirectly to drive her to kill herself?
      • His attempts at trying to help Ai move on from her trauma and return to school? Is he genuinely trying to help her, or are there ulterior motives to involving himself in her life?
      • Does he genuinely love Tae, Ai's mother, or is that simply part of a ploy to get closer to Ai?
      • It's later revealed that he is a genuine Nice Guy, and it was Koito who was the Bitch in Sheep's Clothing. Koito actually had a Precocious Crush on Sawaki like Ai did, but when she confessed and got turned down, she lashed out, accused him of raping her, and threatened to commit suicide if he didn't reciprocate her feelings, only to lose her balance and fall to her death. It's also mentioned that she caused a similar incident at her old school that caused the involved teacher to be Driven to Suicide.
    • Chiaki Kawai. Does she actually not know who Rika's father is because of her alcoholism and sleeping around, or is she lying because she doesn't want Rika to meet her father? And if the latter, is it because she wants to keep Rika to herself and fears he'll take her away, or is it that she's a Well-Intentioned Extremist trying to keep Rika away from a potentially toxic parental figure?
    • It's shown that Wonder Killers are representations of the Maiden's view of someone: Parallel Ai's Killer is an exaggerated form of Sawaki who does things that aren't representative of him in the real world due to him being the sum of Ai's fear and anger about his relationship with her mother. Based on that, are all the Wonder Killers accurate portrayals of real-life people? Were all the Maidens telling the whole truth about their experiences?
  • Angst? What Angst?: A pretty egregious example. Following their respective encounters with Hyphen and Dot, Momoe and Rika are repeatedly and consistently shown to be psychologically broken by the experience, with the former consumed by fear and the latter consumed by vengeful rage. When they appear in the special, however, they appear back to their old selves, despite not much time having passed and having suffered the additional Gut Punch of their resurrected Maidens not remembering them. Rika does reiterate her desire for revenge at one point, but that's about it.
  • Audience-Alienating Ending: The show's finale and the plot points within it (detailed more in the Esoteric Happy Ending and Fanon Discontinuity examples below) was so heavily reviled by fans and critics that it ultimately tarnished the show's once positive reputation overnight.
  • Awesome Music: The opening song, "Sudachi no Uta", which breaks out into a choir and orchestral burst in the chorus.
  • Esoteric Happy Ending: The final episode suffered from the below Fanon Discontinuity largely because of this trope. Despite the fact that the game is over and the Maidens have been resurrected, none of them remember their friendships with the girls in any way because they all come from a parallel dimension where those never existed. Neiru disappears and is revealed to be an AI just like Frill out of nowhere. Later footage shows that Frill, Dot, and Hyphen are still on the loose and Neiru failed to stop them. Several key issues like the identity of Rika's father, Momoe learning to accept herself for who she is, and whether Ai will approve of her mother's relationship with Sawaki never get any resolution. Ai and her friends grow apart with only a vague And the Adventure Continues ending to imply they'll reconcile, assuming Rika didn't actually kill herself after Neiru's reveal as an AI. And that's not even getting into the fact that the real-life people the Wonder Killers are based on are presumably still at large without having suffered the consequences for their cruel behavior while Frill gets away with all of her actions Scot-Free. To many, it seems like the ending means that the main characters completely failed to do anything that had a lasting impact during the entire series.
  • Fan Nickname: Western fans have playfully referred to Neiru as a "girlboss" thanks to her corporate president background.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: The finale was so poorly received that many fans insisted that it never happened, particularly when it came to The Reveal that Koito accidentally fell to her death and had been a Bitch in Sheep's Clothing the entire time.
  • LGBT Fanbase: The show has a huge LGBT following thanks to its all-girl cast that focuses on their relationships mixed with how Ai openly fawns over the various girls she meets. Episode four increased it further with the introduction of the Bifauxnen Momoe who has a lot of characteristics common with a Transgender person.
  • Moe: Ai is very adorable thanks to her cute looks and her cheerful and friendly personality.
  • Special Effect Failure: In the special, when Ai runs from a resurrected Koito, she's clearly running in place.
  • Trans Audience Interpretation: Thanks to her Bifauxnen looks and complex about being mistaken for a boy, many people have run with the idea that Momoe is actually a trans girl. It gets more fuel in episode 10, where she is contrasted with an explicitly trans boy character who even wears trans flag colors on his coat, a coat that he gives to Momoe to wear after she defeats his Wonder Killer, and when she reveals she's also been wearing underclothes with the same colors already.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: While the show has bright colors and a cutesy artstyle with an all-girl cast, the show is anything but kid-friendly, as it features a lot of violence and deals with heavy topics such as suicide. Not to mention it airs at Otaku O'Clock, which is too late at night for any child to be watching this show.
  • The Woobie: Practically every girl can be considered this on account of all the trauma and suffering they endure in the past and present.
