- Adaptation Displacement: So... how many of you have read the original book written by Tim Krabbe (brother of actor Jeroen Krabbé). Go on, go out and find it. It is just under a hundred pages...
- Fanon Discontinuity: Nobody dares discuss the 1993 remake. Not even the director, who directed the original film at that.
- It Was His Sled: Both Rex and Saskia end up Buried Alive.
- Paranoia Fuel: Rex knows Raymond is responsible for Saskia disappearing. He just doesn't know what he did to her. He instantly regrets it when he takes Raymond's deal to find out.
- The Un-Twist: Raymond is established right away as having been near the scene of the crime and having fantasized about kidnapping women. Surely having him be the culprit would be a bit too obvious, right? Nope. The crime is exactly what it appears to be. There is no twist.
