YMMV / The Story of Pollyanna, Girl of Love

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The first Japanese opening theme "Happy Carnival" and the second Japanese opening theme "Hohoemu Anata ni Aitai".
  • Broken Base: Some enjoyed the show but others hated it for excessive drama. Others think it's pretty good, but not without its flaws.
    • The Boston arc pretty much splits fans, with some think it's a good attempt to adapt the show's sequel (Pollyanna Grows Up), while others are unhappy for either having too much dramatization or simply not as good as the first part. The majority of the complaints from the latter, especially to those who dislike the novel counterpart it adapted, usually point out about Dr. Chilton's sudden death in Episode 43, where to them it feels forced and unnecessary.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Some viewers prefered to pretend that the series ended after Episode 27. The first arc is praised for being close to its source material, but the second arc is poorly received mostly for having too much drama which contradicts the central theme of show and its story could have been omitted from the show. The producers of the show seemed to agree, to the point where many of its merchandise in the modern era are more focused on the first arc.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: In Saudi Arabia, this anime aired on TV during The '90s, and became a core part of many childhoods. It was the Gateway Series for many Arabs into anime.
  • Narm: Pollyanna's repeated delivery of the yokatta line in the second arc seems to veer into this status and get a bit awkward after a while.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Aunt Polly was played by Masako Nozawa, who would later dub Son Goku in Dragon Ball series.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Some viewers who read the novel didn't like the idea of Dr. Chilton's death two months after his marriage to Polly, in comparison to the novel where he died when Pollyanna is around 19 - 20 years old.
  • Toy Ship: Pollyanna and Jimmy, especially since they ended up as a couple in the novel.
  • Wangst: Seeing many characters cry in most of the second arc's episodes can be wince-inducing.
  • The Woobie: Pollyanna, as usual, especially since she has a few moments of despair before her getting hit by a car.
    • Jamie himself due to his disability and his worries about losing a chance of healing his legs when his Aunt Ruth finds the real Jamie.
    • Aunt Polly after Dr. Chilton's death. After being married, she didn't expect that her husband would soon taken away from an accident two months later. Even if she keeps her determined attitude, she couldn't help grieve the loss of her husband and she always visits his abandoned clinic to remember him. Not even Pollyanna could help her return to cheerful self.
