YMMV / The Mamas & the Papas

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight: A couple lines from "Creeque Alley": And no one's gettin' fat except Mama Cass/And everybody's gettin' fat except Mama Cass. The first one was actually referring to Cass Elliot being wealthy, but takes on a whole new meaning on July 29, 1974 after her weight contributed to dying in her sleep from a heart attack; the second one talks about the success of The Journeymen, The Byrds, and The Lovin' Spoonful before The Mamas & the Papas were founded, but before Mama Cass joined the group; after her death, it wouldn't have the same meaning anymore.
  • Signature Song: "California Dreamin'" is easily their biggest hit.
  • Spiritual Successor: Many critics compared the Buckingham-Nicks lineup of Fleetwood Mac to The Mamas and The Papas for their tight male-female vocal blend. Both bands were also notorious for affairs among the members.
