YMMV / The Avengers (Jason Aaron)

Go To

  • Arc Fatigue: One of the biggest criticisms of Aaron's run is that it spends over 40 issues of build-up (not helped by tie-ins to Crisis Crossovers in-between), dropping in massive reveals that come out of left field, massive escalations in the stakes, all with no indication to what the story is building up to.
  • Ass Pull
    • Carol somehow being able to resist the Ghost Rider’s penance stare. Up until that point, nothing suggests that she should be able to accomplish something like this, nor would any of her powers normally allow her to protect her soul from the stare. What makes it especially egregious is that when her morally questionable actions in the past are taken into account, there is no way her soul wouldn’t be tainted enough to escape the penance stare unscathed.
    • The general perception of Moon Knight's abilities in the "Age of Khonshu" arc, given Moon Knight's ability to steal other powers. One notable example is Marc being able to telekinetically take control Mjolnir because uru is suddenly considered moon rock.
    • Most of the fights in the Phoenix tournament. All characters receive the Phoenix power, meaning that they have very similar ways of fighting. Everybody can release an energy blast, everybody can shrug attacks off as if they are nothing. And then somebody wins. Why X and not Y? Either just because, or because the Phoenix says so.
    • Thor's mother being Firehair. Not only is there little buildup to it, but it contradicts earlier conceptions that Thor was Jord/Gaea's son.
  • Awesome Art: Ed McGuiness' pencils have been consistently praised as a highlight.
  • Broken Base: Generally, people either think it's a high octane action book that delivers on big concepts like "Dark Celestials" while others think it's boring and filled with needless retcons.
  • Complete Monster (issue #7 ("Fire and Bone")): The Wendigo, a white stranger who befriends the very first inheritor of the Ghost Rider mantle, reveals by the end of his conversation that he slaughtered and ate his entire tribe in a bout of sadistic, evil hunger. The Wendigo promptly follows suit on every single being within Ghost's own clan, sparing the boy out only out of amusement and dubbing him "Ghost" to begin with—"a thing that doesn't even know it's dead". The Wendigo has murdered and eaten countless people, enough that Ghost can fashion a chain with them, and he proclaims he won't stop killing until he's strong enough to be a god.
  • Epileptic Trees: The "Heroes Reborn" teasers had many people guessing; even after it was revealed to be spinning off from this book, people are still theorizing exactly why the world seems to have rebooted. Most people have pegged Mephisto.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Thor fans prefer that the reveal of Firehair being Thor's mother never happened. Granted, it's since been revealed that Firehair isn't actually his biological mother, Gaea still is, it's just that Firehair resurrected him when he was killed by Laufey, making him his second mother.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: The Phoenix tournament arc, composed by individual fights between given characters, is yet another event where multiple characters compete for the Phoenix.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The character changes for Robbie and Jen were heavily derided. Robbie goes from a Stoic Woobie and lone wolf, to a dumb, energetic fanboy who constantly makes stupid quips. Meanwhile, Jen's brutish appearance, dumbed-down demeanor when Hulked out, and her questionable mental state are seen as a bad attempt to make her just like her cousin, rather than respecting her real character.
  • Unexpected Character: The people summoned by the Phoenix as potential hosts. Captain America, Black Panther, and She-Hulk are not unexpected choices, as this is their comic book. Neither Namor, Hyperion, Nighthawk, and Red Widow, who were already in the subplots. After that... we have Wolverine, Valkyrie (Jane Foster), Shang-Chi, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, and Luke Cage, who are frequent characters in Marvel Comics, but nobody would have thought as hosts of the Phoenix force. Neither Echo, Black Knight, Man-Thing and Shanna the Devil, who are not even that mainstream either. And then there are the truly bizarre options of The Orb and Howard the Duck!
    • The Orb's presence is at least justified between being a Creator's Favorite of Aaron's (going back to Original Sin) and bringing him into Avengers to set up his supporting role in Avengers #50.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Issue 20, which is one big Take That! against critics who disliked the changes done to She-Hulk, has Jennifer, after recalling how her cousin Bruce once envied her for being adored as She-Hulk while he's hated, comment on how Bruce does not understand the struggles she has to deal with as She-Hulk, such as being lusted after and sexually harassed. The problem for many readers is that given all that Bruce has been throughout his life, it's understandable why Bruce would believe how much Jennifer is better off compared to him and it makes Jennifer extremely ignorant of Bruce's own issues.
