"The Play's the Thing"

"Rodeo Daze"

  • Fanon Discontinuity: More than half the fandom wishes to forget this episode exists, basing their dislike for it on the number of filler scenes, SpongeBob and Patrick being extra dumb and annoying at the beginning, everyone being too careless to help SpongeBob save Sandy, SpongeBob forcing them to do so by kidnapping them, and the ending rendering the entire episode utterly pointless since we already know Sandy has Super-Strength and would have been fine on her own. The only thing people will agree was good about the episode is Sandy's song about rodeos.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The idea of Sandy and SpongeBob going to Texas (along with the whole of Bikini Bottom) is this when, over a decade later, it was announced that it would essentially be the plot of Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie. The only difference is that it’s an evil CEO who steals Bikini Bottom and Sandy and SpongeBob have to rescue everybody.
  • Never Live It Down: Happens to practically everyone in this episode.
    • SpongeBob for thinking that Sandy’s in danger and forcing everyone to go to Texas against their will.
    • The Bikini Bottomites for their sudden indifference towards Sandy.
    • Sandy for her ungrateful reaction to seeing everyone.
  • Special Effect Failure: The Anti-Climax featuring live-action photoshopped images looks like some fan-made project from YouTube. It's hard to believe that it was allowed to air on television.
  • Squick: The Gross-Up Close-Up of the moldy Krabby Patty meat piece pulled out from SpongeBob's ear. Made all the more disgusting after Patrick eats it.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The episode sets up the idea of the Bikini Bottomites, or at least SpongeBob himself, traveling to the surface world and finally getting to experience Sandy’s home in Texas, which could have easily made for an exciting special. But that only happens literally during the last minute and it’s done with embarrassingly bad visuals.
