YMMV / Speaking in Tongues

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: While most people consider Speaking in Tongues to be roughly tied with Fear of Music for the position of Talking Heads' second-best album (behind Remain in Light), a subset of fans are willing to argue that it's more worthy of being considered the band's artistic peak.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Not to a vitriolic degree, but the 41-minute cut of Speaking in Tongues is typically ignored by fans in favor of the 47-minute cut, both because of the greater song lengths on the latter and the fact that the Stop Making Sense performance of "Girlfriend is Better" includes the extended lyrics. Given that the 47-minute cut was never released on vinyl, this tends to be a sticking point for LP collectors.
  • Heartwarming Moments: "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)", in which David Byrne— cynical nerd extraordinaire— lets his guard down over the course of just under five minutes to present a cozy song about how he found someone. One commenter on YouTube summed up the song's mood quite succinctly as "a song you feel like you've always known."
  • Signature Song: If people don't immediately think of "Once in a Lifetime" or "Psycho Killer" when they hear the name "Talking Heads", they typically think "Burning Down the House", "Girlfriend Is Better", or "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)". For a short while, "Burning Down the House" was actually the top candidate for Talking Heads' signature song before "Once in a Lifetime" eventually overtook it.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: A lot of people cite "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" as a simple, heartwarming song about finding love.
