YMMV / South Park S14E6 "201"

Go To

  • Alas, Poor Scrappy: Pip getting unceremoniously Squashed Flat by Barbra Streisand, with absolutely nobody noticing his death.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Did Cartman really not care about the fact that he killed his biological father? Or he just wanted to save face in front of his friends?
  • Broken Base:
    • The censor job has torn the fanbase, as well as the general public, to shreds. It got even more heated when the speech near the end was revealed.
    • Among fans of the episode, there's a splinter in that some viewers find that the censorship helps to underscore the point of the episode, thereby improving it, while some viewers find that it simply makes the episode hard to enjoy, especially since you need to do some hunting around the 'net to find out what the real ending speech was about.
    • The Internal Retcon of Cartman's father, to a lesser extent. Some fans believe that Carman having accidentally killed his father and fed it to his half-brother in what used to be his greatest victory is a much more satisfying reveal than Liane being a hermaphrodite (which disappointed a lot of viewers back in the day) while others preferred the original explanation, and believe that the reveal that it was all a fabricated lie has some holes in it, mainly that the candidates for Cartman's father did not react to the "hermaphrodite" news like they were putting on an act when they found out. While the revelation with Scott Tenorman was pretty shocking (and paved the way for many theories and fan works between him and Cartman), it's casually dismissed and never brought up again, since the show is determined not to bring any attention back to these episodes.
    • Among all the returning classic characters, Pip finally appearing again only to get Squashed Flat by Mecha-Streisand's Foot is probably the second most contested Character Death after Chef's. Your stance on it likely depends on whether you found the character endearing or annoying. If anything, the fact that absolutely nobody seems to care about his death (without even a "Oh my God, they killed Pip!" from the other characters) can make the scene feel a tad too disrespectful for a character that, for better or worse, has been with them since the beginning.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: For Pip fans, the scene where he "confronts" Mecha-Streisand does not exist. It helps that his death has zero relevance on the rest of the episode or the series as a whole, since the character had been Out of Focus for 8 years, making the scene come across as a borderline Big-Lipped Alligator Moment if you aren't familiar with the early seasons.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: This episode was finished weeks before its airdate, so Comedy Central censored the ending speech that glamorized using threats to get what you want when exactly that was happening to them. It got worse when two weeks later, a car bomb was found near Viacom's headquarters in Times Square (though it was revealed that the show had no part in the plot).
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: On the other hand, the scene of Buddha and Jesus vulgarly bickering over their respective addictions to cocaine and internet porn is this after the Season 23 episode Christmas Snow has Jesus Himself snort cocaine.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The most infamous example in South Park's history. This episode is a huge bump in the series' road and the fact that it was either heavily censored or banned outright (and caused similar episodes like "Super Best Friends", the "Cartoon Wars" two-parter, and even its own predecessor "200" to be shelved forever) is the only thing that people know about this episode.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: Pip was a notorious Creator's Pest for Matt and Trey, so his death here can be seen as this for them as well as anyone who disliked him.
