YMMV / RWBY: Destiny of Remnant

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character: Ashe Kasai. He's either a decently written character and a Jerk Ass With A Heart Of Gold or a poorly written angsty Anti-Hero whose sole purpose in the entire story was to develop Cinder’s character. Some would go far as to even call him a blatant Self-Insert and some cheap Punisher knockoff.
  • Broken Base:
    • The author's rants against RT killing off Pyrrha, especially in his author's notes. While some fans understand his grief, others find his rants annoying, selfish and reeking of Opinion Myopia. It doesn't help that most of his rants bleed into the story, dissuading many readers. Notably this became more muted as the series progressed and the rants became less frequent.
    • The third arc, in general, due to some readers calling it a bore to get through. Not helped by the fact of Sharp Strike and the Remnant Knights being a bore to some.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: The fall of the CCT tower did not affect communications between Kingdoms like in canon. This was deliberate, as UGX7 felt that it was stupid that the Kingdoms have no backups in place if such a situation happened.
  • Growing the Beard: The author himself feels that the story starts off a bit weak and doesn't find its footing until chapters 5 to 7.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In a flashback we see Ashe telling Sharp Strike that he intends to find his sister and maybe get a happy ending. Then fast forward to the present in which Ashe finds Cinder and discovers that she killed their parents and sworn to Salem's service, before being killed by the only family member he had left in the world.
    • In this fanfiction, while Mr. Schnee has indeed been quite a Jerkass towards both Winter and Weiss in addition to making quite a number of mistakes as well, he eventually gains a Heel Realization after Winter has been released from prison due to her role in helping Qrow, Weiss and a number of their allies to escape from Atlas, and she refused to accept his apology. He made amends by doing some investigation about slavery on his own, before contacting the United Anti-Slavery Organization (UASO) to plan a way to capture one of the most notorious slavers on Remnant, and did some "house-cleaning" within the SDC as well. While it doesn't condone his previous actions, it does show that he's willing to make some progress in terms of reconciliation with both Winter and Weiss. As seen from RWBY Volume 4, The Schnee senior could have been much, much worse.
    • In this fic, without Claudandus's moderating influence within the White Fang (which he is the founder of and Blake directly helping Adam to usurp power from) Adam had easily seized control of the said organization and set about using them for his own ends of taking revenge on the humans due to his Dark and Troubled Past. Adam had even revealed to Claudandus that his destiny would be to break and enslave humanity by having the Faunus race rule Remnant, and he has thrown in his lot with Salem's faction to make it happen. Similar to what happened in RWBY Volume 5, Adam mentioned he would do whatever it takes and that he doesn't care how many lives are lost in the process, and weeded out anyone who oppose him by amputating their Faunus features and locking them up, while also sending all the dissidents to a remote mine in Vacuo to be horrifically killed by a Grimm Commander and making martyrs out of them that will inflame White Fang violence against humans and serve his twisted vision of the White Fang's cause. Given what has happened in RWBY Volume 5, the similarities between what has happened in canon and in this fic are disturbingly accurate since Adam's motivations for taking over the White Fang has been revealed and he killed Sienna Khan to make her a martyr for his cause of enslaving the humans.
    • In Chapter 42, Adam reveals what's behind his mask. The logo of the Schnee Dust Company branded on him, burned into his forehead with the words 'Property of' carved above the snowflake emblem. Given what has happened in RWBY Volume 6, this is disturbingly accurate.
    • In the White Fang Arc, Blake visited Sun Wukong's family in Hondayama. This is all the more heartbreaking for those who read RWBY: Before the Dawn, where the novel confirms that Sun has no parents.
    • While in this fic Nora had parents who both love her and sacrificed themselves for her safety, in Volume 8 we learn that Nora's real parents abandoned her before Ren found her.
    • During the Battle of Atlas Cinder successfully murders the Winter Maiden and helps Salem claim her powers, whereas in canon she's driven off and fails to gain the Winter Maiden's powers.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: We have a few examples.
    • In Chapter 50, we see Thorn Branch (who is actually Salem's candidate for the Summer Maiden's powers) making an amusing Lampshade Hanging remark about Cinder's Punny Name and her new role as the Fall Maiden. In RWBY Volume 5, readers of the fic would of course notice the same thing happening with Raven Branwen pointing out in that Volume that Cinder Fall is a strangely fitting name for somebody who became the Fall Maiden. She even sarcastically suggests that Cinder chose her last name on purpose just to make it fit.
  • Moral Event Horizon: A number of antagonistic characters have crossed this over the course of the fic.
    • Adam crossed this when he ordered the amputation of animal features from any Faunus who attempt to leave the White Fang, and sent all dissidents to a remote base to be horrifically murdered by the Grimm, and used the latter's deaths to drum up sympathy for the White Fang.
    • Cinder crossed this a long time ago after what she had done in canon, in addition to murdering her own parents and lying to her younger brother, physically and mentally torturing Ruby and Jaune while they were in her capture, and finally killing her younger brother by ripping out his heart from his chest under the orders of Salem.
  • Tearjerker: Quite a few, the most significant being Ashe's death and Adam's backstory.
  • The Woobie: Ruby, Jaune, Blake, Penny, Yang, and Piper.
    • There are times in the fic one really want to give Pyrrha a comforting hug.
    • Ashe is a Jerkass Woobie.
