YMMV / Polly Pocket

Go To

  • Adorkable: All three of the main characters in the 2018 series fall into this:
    • Polly falls into this because of the empathy and sweetness she has for others, combined with a penchant for making inventions and the cheesy puns she makes.
    • Lila falls into this whenever she gets excited about something she's passionate about something she loves, particularly with fashion.
    • Shani is a bit nerdy and socially awkward, yet she's also very lovable and is such a geek for science fiction.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: A lot of the fans of the 2018 series liked Gwen for being a funny take on the Minion with an F in Evil trope, and were disappointed when she got written out.
  • Escapist Character: The 2003-06 specials' incarnation of Polly is very much this — she's incredibly rich (to the point of getting her own private water park and a theme park named after her), she's fashionable, she has a loyal group of friends, and she's the most popular girl in school. Who in the target demographic wouldn't want to be in her shoes?
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Fans of the older, more compact versions made by Bluebird don't care about the larger-sized Polly figures (i.e., anything made by Mattel) that transformed her into Barbie Jr. The 2010's line (which focuses on a mix of both types of toy) has been much better received.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The short-lived Cutants spinoff line has several characters that wouldn't look out of place in the Shopkins universe, which came out several years later and made by a completely different company.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Beth from the 2003-6 specials. Sure, she's mean and willing to rain on Polly's parade, but you might feel sorry for her because she's so jealous of Polly that she can't focus on her own life. It doesn't help that she states in the Lunar Eclipse special that she claims that she always comes in second when her parents expect her to come in first.
  • Moe: Many people in the 2018 series falls into this, but Polly, Lila, and Shani stand out due to having many adorable moments and a strong friendship with each other.
  • Seasonal Rot: The 2018 series has received complaints following the removal of its main antagonists Griselle and Gwen Grande, with the plots becoming more slice-of-life with little to no antagonists.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: In "Adventures in Dragon-sitting" Griselle and Gwen finally return after a long absence, but only for one scene. Polly acts like they were never gone and the events of the first season finale are never brought up.
