- Breather Level:
- The Frosted Glacier level: Ice-Slide Expressway. It gives you a penguin suit and lets you slide through most of the stage collecting coins.
- Flying Squirrel Ovation, the final level. Just a lot of gliding and easily avoidable enemies.
- Broken Base: The expansion's presentation and plot not being any different from New Super Mario Bros. U aside from Mario's absence and Nabbit's omnipresence alongside Luigi's unique jump mechanics. Some people excuse this since the game's basically a glorified Game Mod and Downloadable Content, while others would have liked a more Luigi-centric plot akin to the other Year of Luigi games with more differences when compared to the main game (which already reuses some things from New Super Mario Bros. Wii), and many people who ship Luigi with Princess Daisy and/or are fans of her would like Luigi to save her instead.
- Ensemble Dark Horse: Nabbit since he's the perfect character due to not being affected by enemies. Also because of the Troll factor regarding how he deals with Power Ups.
- Fridge Brilliance: New Super Mario Bros. U's case is blue, this game is a remix of it with other stages and got a green case, Super Mario Maker is for making courses and remixes, its case is yellow. If you mix yellow and blue you get green!
- Game-Breaker:
- Mini Mushrooms + Shoulder Buttons or Shaking the Wii Remote + Luigi's Physics = This. It allows flying through levels.
- Nabbit. He's completely invincible to any non-One-Hit Kill, even being able to touch a King Bill and still not take damage. Plus, he's great for Infinite 1-Ups, since every power-up he finds is converted into one at the end of the level. And each and every one of them is essential for beating the game.
- It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: Even though it's somewhat justified considering it's just Downloadable Content. In the same vein of Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels, this game is similarly considered to be just New Super Mario Bros. U without Mario, with Nabbit and Luigi's unique jump mechanics, and harder (alongside shorter and more time limited this time) levels.
- Sequel Difficulty Spike: New Super Luigi U is to New Super Mario Bros. U what Lost Levels is to Super Mario Bros.: that is to say, very difficult.
- That One Level:
- Shish-Kebab Tower. The Skewers from Super Mario World just Took a Level in Badass.
- Para-Beetle Parade, due to the lack of solid ground and King Bills.
- Fire Bar Sprint is also nigh-impossible without Nabbit, due to little room for avoiding those Fire Bars. And it's necessary to stay Super Luigi for the last Star Coin.
