YMMV / Money in the Bank

Go To

  • Author's Saving Throw: Many view the 2016 edition as the company's way of saying sorry for the disastrous WrestleMania 32 earlier that year. The fact that every storyline afterwards more-or-less pretends WrestleMania never happened lends credence to that idea.
  • Bizarro Episode: Needless to say, 2020 will be the year in which the very weird and crazy namesake match took place across WWE's Titan Tower.
  • Broken Base:
    • Money in the Bank 2017 got some very mixed reactions:
      • The show had very screwy finishes to over half of its matches, but none more so than the women's ladder match, which saw Carmella walking away with the briefcase. Why? Because James Ellsworth climbed the ladder, retrieved it, and dropped it to her. Some fans are all right with this result because Carmella and Ellsworth are heels and would pull a stunt such as this to get heat. However, there are a lot of fans who say the problem isn't that they did this at all, it's that they did this in the first ever women's Money in the Bank ladder match. WWE touted the match as being historic in the build-up, and then had a man pull down the briefcase to give it to a woman.
      • The New Day officially won their match against The Usos for the Tag Team Championship, but it was a count out victory, so the Usos retained the championship. Many people hate seeing any title match end on a count out, but at the same time, this was one that the Usos forced themselves, so it was also a way to get heat.
      • Carmella showed up during the Women's Championship match between Naomi and Lana to tease cashing in her Money in the Bank contract. The odd part was that this led to Lana losing the match, so we had a case of one heel causing another heel to lose.
      • Jinder Mahal retaining the WWE Championship against Randy Orton was contentious enough, as many people still don't consider Mahal to be a credible champion. However, this time, Orton was distracted by the Singh brothers, when, in reaction to getting ejected from ringside by the referee after putting Mahal's foot on the rope during a pin attempt, they decided to assault Randy's father, "Cowboy" Bob Orton, who was sitting at ringside. This led to Orton coming to his dad's aid and going to town on the Singh brothers, which gave Mahal time to recover. The problem is that this was more or less how their championship match at Backlash one month earlier had gone, so it was mostly just a rerun.
      • And all that's not including the fact that this edition was SmackDown exclusive, which made fans wonder if Raw was going to have a King of the Ring tournament to compensate for this.
    • The 2020 edition is also very divisive. Some people thought it was creative and hilarious (it has an entire folder to itself on our page), some thought it was just inconceivably stupid and unfunny, not to mention utterly pointless in the end as neither winner actually got to even attempt to cash in their briefcase.note  Notably, the entire match was inducted into WrestleCrap.
  • Fan Nickname: The 2020 edition has been titled "Murder in the Bank" due to the ending of the Money in the Bank match having Baron Corbin "murdering" Rey Mysterio and Aleister Black by hurling them off the roof.
  • Fountain of Memes: Money in the Bank 2020 has joined both Boneyard Match and Firefly Funhouse Match at WrestleMania 36 as one of the most memed matches of the year.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Drew McIntyre offering his defeated opponent Seth Rollins a handshake in the 2020 edition is given a different light following the announcement the next day that Rollins is gonna be a father.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • The cash-ins are popularly used as jokes for Your Princess Is in Another Castle! scenarios.
    • Baron Corbin throwing off Rey Mysterio in the rooftop balcony during the 2020 edition saw fans editing the clip with Mysterio's original WWE theme ("Who's that jumping up the sky? R-e-y Mysterio, here we go!"). Alternatively, just like fans joked that AJ Styles really died in the Boneyard Match, both Rey Mysterio and Aleister Black were killed and Corbin is wanted for murder.
  • Shocking Moments:
    • Expect to see some high risk move off the ladder. Especially if said person is a high flyer.
    • The 2011 edition had this in spades.
    • The ending to the 2016 edition was nothing but this.
    • Alexa Bliss shockingly cashing in the Money in the Bank contract during the 2018 event to become a three-time Raw Women's Champion (winning it was shocking on its own after losing the title only two months prior that ended a 223-day reign).
    • Baron Corbin throwing off both Rey Mysterio and Aleister Black on the rooftop balcony during the 2020 edition. While there's obviously a safety padding below, it's still a shocking sight to see.
  • Signature Scene
    • 2010: Kane winning the WWE SmackDown Money in the Bank match and cashing in his MITB briefcase on Rey Mysterio to win the World Heavyweight Championship.
    • 2011: CM Punk winning the WWE Title and leaving the arena with it — less than two hours before his WWE contract expired.
    • 2012: CM Punk vs Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship.
    • 2013: Paul Heyman betraying CM Punk and costing him the Money in the Bank ladder match.
    • 2014: Seth Rollins winning the Money in the Bank match or John Cena winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship for the 15th time.
    • 2015: John Cena vs Kevin Owens — the rematch.
    • 2016: Dean Ambrose cashing in his MITB briefcase on Seth Rollins to win the WWE Title — right after Rollins had just defeated Roman Reigns, ensuring that every single member of The Shield was WWE World Heavyweight Champion on the same night.
    • 2017: AJ Styles and Shinsuke Nakamura's stand-off during the men's MITB match.
    • 2018: Alexa Bliss cashing in her MITB briefcase on Nia Jax to win the Raw Women's Title.
    • 2019: Either Bayley winning the Women's MITB match and later cashing in the briefcase on new-SmackDown Women's Champion Charlotte Flair to win the title, Seth Rollins vs AJ Styles for the WWE Universal Championship, Andrade's sunset flip bomb on Finn Balor on the ladder, or Brock Lesnar winning the Men's Money in the Bank, despite not being in the match.
    • 2020: The Money in the Bank Match taking place in WWE HQ. Specifically the scenes of Asuka and Otis both winning the match, with the latter winning it by accident. Baron Corbin throwing off both Rey Mysterio and Aleister Black on the rooftop balcony during the men's match also gained notoriety.
    • 2021: John Cena making his return.
    • 2022: Liv Morgan cashing in her MITB briefcase on Ronda Rousey to win the SmackDown Women's Championship.
    • 2023: Roman Reigns's first loss after three and a half years at the hands of The Usos.
  • Special Effects Failure: In the 2020 event, the crash pad used to gimmick Rey and Aleister's falls is clearly visible in some of the panoramic shots of the top of the building.
  • Unexpected Character: Brock Lesnar showing up in the 2019 Men's MitB match, replacing Sami Zayn who was injured before the event.
  • Values Dissonance: From 2010 to 2016, there was no women's Money in the Bank ladder match (the first Money in the Bank PPV did feature two women's matches which were rare at the time, but they were singles matches for the WWE Divas Championship and the WWE Women's Championship). However, the WWE Women's Evolution allowed WWE's female talents to compete in the Money in the Bank ladder match beginning in 2017 and these days, not having a women's MITB match would get plenty of fan backlash these days as gender equality and feminism are on the rise.
