YMMV / Killer and Healer

Go To

  • Anvilicious: The show emphasizes that Drugs Are Bad and getting involved with the drug business can ruin one's life. This is more emphasized when Yuelou learns that his mother became a drug dealer and rightfully calls her out because drugs destroyed their family, leaving Yuelou to fend for himself when he was young.
  • Broken Base: The ending. Some liked it because it's realistic and given the setting of the show, it's foretold that neither of the male leads is going to get a happy ending. Others hated it because it put everything that Yuelou and Yuzhi had fought for to waste and saw the ending as Bury Your Gays.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: While the show implies that Jiang Yuelou has manic depression (an old term for bipolar disorder), some fans believe that he has complex post-traumatic stress disorder given that his trigger was the domestic abuse from his childhood home.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: A lot of fans loved the portrayal of Zhan Junbai thanks to the performance of his actor. Even though his relationship with Yu Tangchun/Fu Cheng fell apart in the end, many fans still ship them regardless of how tragic and misguided it is.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: A lot of fans like Yuelou's loyal subordinates, Sun Yongren and Song Rong, because not only do they support their boss but they also care about Chen Yuzhi. Song Rong is even regarded by fans as a Yuelou/Yuzhi shipper. When both men were killed off in the middle of the show, many fans were devasted.
  • Fanfic Fuel:
    • For fans who are disappointed with the ending, they wrote fanfics where Yuzhi doesn't die and lives happily with Yuelou.
    • There are also fanfics where Zhan Junbai is reformed so he can be with Tangchun.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Many fans reject the last minutes of the final episode where Yuzhi dies and prefer the alternate ending where he lives.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Jiang Zhangnan. Despite the revelation that she's Jiang Yuelou's Missing Mom who had gone through a lot of abuse, some viewers don't feel sorry for her because she abandoned her son who is left to fend for himself in the streets and after the man rescued her was a drug dealer, she inherits his drug business despite knowing that drugs ruined her family. Bai Jinbo points out that she made that choice which doesn't help that she's more than willing to support Zhan Junbai's plans. When she learns the truth that Yuelou is her son, she begins to regret her decision and believes she's not a good mother. When Yuelou meets his mother face-to-face, not only he rejects her attempts to reconnect with him but he calls her out for her abandonment and her hypocrisy of being a drug dealer who ruined the lives of other families.
    • Bai Jinbo after he betrayed Yuelou and joined Zhan Junbai out of fear. Many viewers were disappointed with him given that he's a high-ranking police officer who had faced drug lords in the past and had supported some of Yuelou's questionable decisions to fulfill his mission. At this point, viewers saw him as a hypocrite and coward who aided the Zhan family in conquering the city and endangering the civilians he swore to protect. Even though Bai Jinbo explains to Yuelou that he's ashamed of what he did, viewers have a hard time empathizing with him which doesn't help that he's willing to shoot Yuelou, his own adopted son.
  • The Woobie: Jiang Yuelou's life changed when his father became an opium addict who ended up abusing his wife and using all their money for drugs. Then, his mother left their home and never returned. After his father dies of a drug overdose, Yuelou is forced by his father's debtors to pay for his father's debt despite being just a kid with no income. Because of this, Yuelou lived in the streets as a peddler, trying to survive until Bai Jinbo saved and adopted him. While Yuelou grows up to be a dedicated policeman, he's still haunted by the past when he learns that his mother is a drug dealer and is responsible for the deaths of his two loyal subordinates. Then, during his undercover mission to confront San Ye, he makes a difficult choice to push away the people he cares about, which includes shooting Chen Yuzhi. As the story goes on, the people he cared for end up dying one by one such as Bai Jinbo and Chu Ran. In the end, Yuelou loses Yuzhi.
