  • Designated Hero:
    • Ed's plan to not only breakup a woman's engagement but to pretend to be something he's not in order to attract her comes across as deceitful and selfish.
    • Catherine does not exactly come off unscathed either, as she states that she believes that intelligent people should only marry other intelligent people so their children will likewise be intelligent. While this probably intended to be part of the ususal "haughty lead in a romantic comedy" fare, no one making the film seemed to realize that this is essentially the idea behind Eugenics, an idea which the Nazis espoused. It's disturbing to think that the niece of Albert Einstein, a Holocaust survivor, believes this. note
  • Fridge Horror: Catherine believes that intelligent people should only marry other intelligent people so their children will likewise be intelligent. This is essentially the idea behind Eugenics, an idea which the Nazis espoused. It's disturbing to think that the niece of Albert Einstein, a Holocaust survivor, believes this.
  • Retroactive Recognition: This film was Stephen Fry's first Hollywood feature.
  • So Okay, It's Average: Of all of Meg Ryan's rom coms from the 1990s, this one is largely forgotten. It didn't even have its own TV Tropes entry until 2022!
