YMMV / Gravity Falls S2 E9 "The Love God"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Wendy in her Jerkass moment could be having Anger Born of Worry; she knows that Robbie is a bad boyfriend and that he resorted to brainwashing to keep them together. She could be worried about her best friend ending up with a guy that is bad news without asking her — never mind that Mabel used love potion to make that pairing happen— and wants to "rip her highlights out" as a form of a Dope Slap.
  • Ass Pull: Thompson's last minute Butt-Monkey Batman Gambit to immediately bring his friends back together again at the end can be seen as this by some viewers.
  • Broken Base: One of the most divisive episodes of the series. People who love it think it's one of the funniest episodes of the show. Others despise it for many characters becoming jerks. However, everyone loves the gag with Stan's balloon.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Some fans would like to ignore this episode's existence due to Wendy's, Lee's and Nate's Jerkass Ball and the stupidity of the plot their negative reaction would cause in the episode.
  • Signature Scene: This episode is best remembered for Stan's "I Heart Kids"/"I Eat Kids" balloon. It even gets its own page in Gravity Falls: Journal 3.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: In The Stinger in one of the photos of Waddles and Gomper's "wedding," Wendy getting shoved in the face by Soos, while he was trying to catch the bouquet and Wendy was eating a piece of the wedding cake, was a rather karmatic punishment for her and her friends' negative reaction to Robbie and Tambry dating that made them spurn poor Thompson to a point where he becomes The Woobie of this episode and forces the Mystery Twins to go on a wild goose chase to needlessly break the lovebirds up, which gets fortunately averted when the Pines siblings have second thoughts.
