YMMV / Five Nights at Freddy's High School

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: Season 2 gives the message that wallowing in self-pity will alienate you from other people's problems.
    • Mangle was too busy moping about how Foxy spends more time with his new friends than her, and when Joy is absent from the band contest (due to being possessed by her shadow self and becoming Shadow Joy), she assumes she left her too. It's only after Joy returns to normal and she sees Foxy has been possessed as well that Mangle decides to stop assuming the worst of her friends and decides to reach up to them. Shame Season 3 happened, retconning all her Character Development.
    • Cami was so obsessed with her revenge on the world, that she's surprised to her that Towntrap and Eak want to save her. Even though they're Childhood Friends, Cami was too busy feeling sorry for herself due to her past as a bullied child that she never considered Towntrap and Eak as friends.
  • Broken Base: Season 3. To some it's a huge animation improvement, while to some it's a Retcon of the whole series, dropping the High School AU for a magical girl AU and throwing the Character Development out of the window.
    • Some fans also treat it like it's own parrelel universe entirely.
    • The name changes due to copyright. Mangle/Meg gets hit with this the hardest; with her name change being the most divisive. Fans either called her Meg with no problem or still continue to call her Mangle. The fact she's never called by her new name unlike characters like Joy (Toy Chica) or Fox (Foxy) doesn't help.
    • Bon Bon/Usagi also has this problem.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Springtrap. Even those who disliked the series admit that he's the only interesting character.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple:
    • Freddy/Golden is another extremely popular pairing, despite them barely interacting. Even Golden's canon crush on Chica hasn't killed the popularity of this pairing.
    • On the hetero side, Toddy/Onnie is well-liked due to being the least hated hetero ship (aside from Oxy/Onnie shippers). They even seemed to have some development in Season 2.
  • Fanon: BonBon/Usagi is thought to be related to Bon in some way. Be it sibling, step-siblings, or cousins.
    • Since we never see a real FNAFHS redition of Nightmare Chica or the Phantoms, some people theorize Shadow Joy is Nightmare Chica and Cami is Phantom Chica.
      • Owynn being the redition of the Purple Guy (now known as William Afton) is also popular.
    • Due to her being portrayed by the musical youtuber Lucy Chan, fans think Toddy can sing but prefers not to (whether be it because of sheer laziness or a Darkand Troubled Past that was never elaborated on).
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Some fans LOVE forgetting that Mangle is Foxy's little sister, despite the obvious hints dropped in the series. Becomes especially ugly if we're talking of rabid fangirls who want to see Mangle together with Foxy instead of Springtrap. Or Foxy with someone other than Chica.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Towntrap's parents being killed by poachers doesn't sound like fantasy considering that Mexico had many activists killed by the mafia for the past years.
    • Joy supporting Bon to go after Bonnie doesn't feel the same after it was revealed by some tweets that Joy's actress, Lucy-chan, is homophobic and supports conversion camps.
    • Maggie was sexually harrassed by a grown man as a child. In January 2024, sexual harassment and assault allegations surfaced against Dama G, her voice actress.
  • Hilariousin Hindsight: Both variations of the Marionette being female (though Puppet is a Wholesome Crossdresser) is strangely accurate now that it's been revealed the animitronic they're based off of was revealed to house a female spirit in Ultimate Custom Night.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy:
    • At this point (without getting into too much detail) there are more videos criticizing the series with countless (very long and detailed) rant videos, which often leads to criticizing the series and its fanbase— than videos about the series itself, with Edd00chan especially being a controversial and often memetic (for the wrong reasons) character.
    • The "Como Salir del Closet" video (see Broken Aesop above).
    • In 2018, Edd00chan released plush toys of Freddy, Fred and Mangle. The reactions were mixed, as while the fans liked it, the haters weren't pleased by how Edd00chan is selling merchandise out of a fanwork of Five Nights at Freddy's.
  • Ships That Pass in the Night: When they were initally introduced Abby and Lilly were shipped with Oxy and Onnie. Onnie/Abby were shipped due to their similar personalities while it's assumed Lily/Oxy became a thing when they were put in the same team for the camping arc and they probably would've had an Opposites Attract interaction had their Team won the most votes.
  • The Scrappy: Toddy, for her callousness and jerkass attitude....and how she's an obstacle to Bon/Bonnie. However, some people find her mannerisms too funny for her to be completely unlikable and she does get Character Development at the end of Season 2.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Mangle. She treats the Animatronics (especially Chica) like crap, because she blames them for splitting her and Foxy apart. Except her Irrational Hatred of Chica is actually just jealousy since she learns Foxy loves Chica, which causes her to lash out and only drive Foxy further away from her.
    • The Image Song "Una Amistad" sure does try to make you sympathize with Onnie and his past as an abused child who sees the Nightmare gang as his true family... after Season 3 shows him to be a remorseless bully, sadistically beating the shit out of Bonnie together with Oxy (even though his Image Song reveals he doesn't like hurting others and only does out of peer pressure).
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Apart from a couple fleeting snippets of dialogue, it can be hard for some viewers to tell that Puppet's a girl. It doesn't help that she wears a necktie and the male school uniform.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Some fans really wanted Bon and BonBon/Usagi to be related simply for them both being a gender variation of Toy Bonnie. Heck, they could've actually pulled off if BonBon/Usagi had kept her old design (or atleast her old hair color).
