YMMV / Dora and Friends: Into the City!

• Audience-Alienating Premise: It's Dora the Explorer without the exploring and without most of the original cast. This is one of the reasons the series almost ended up a Franchise Killer.
• Fanon Discontinuity: A lot of fans don't like the idea of Dora having a Girliness Upgrade and leaving behind her friends in the rain forest to become a normal kid. Many thought she'd grow up into an Indiana Jones style adventurer (as exemplified in the CollegeHumor film parody), which makes the idea of her undertaking more mundane activites in a city all the more unappealing. Notably, Dora and the Lost City of Gold makes it pretty clear that this show never did happen, making it actual Canon Discontinuity.
• Growing the Beard: For fans dissatisfied with the movie, the actual show brought back more of the adventure aspects, and included villains at times.
• Older Than the Demographic: The show is an odd example. Dora is now 10 years old and the show deals with issues that kids in that age group would be interested in, such as activism, but it's aimed at the same 4-8 year old demographic as Dora the Explorer.
• Older Than They Think: Pablo was not a new creation for Into The City. He had made three appearances in the original series, his first being all the way back in season 1.
• They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
  • From both parents and people who grew up on the original show, this was the reception of "tween Dora". With parents, the concern was that Dora was "too sexualized" or that there was unfortunate implications in her going from an androgynous tomboy to a Girly Girl just because she's older^note Dora the Explorer itself has gotten a Girliness Upgrade since season 1, with Dora wearing dresses in many episodes, but Dora's default is still a Tomboy with a Girly Streak. With fans, the idea of Dora leaving Boots and her friends to hang out in the city and be a "normal kid" didn't seem right, especially in comparison to Dora's cousins in Go, Diego, Go!. Dora And Friends: Into The City helped mitigate some of the fan complaints by showing Dora still goes on adventures.
  • Dora And Friends: Into The City received this in comparison to the Dora's Explorer Girls special mainly due to the lower quality animation and going back to the Fake Interactivity (and more immature perceived) style of Dora the Explorer.
