YMMV / Bojack Horseman S 6 E 08 A Quick One While Hes Away

Go To

  • Adorkable: After Pete helps Hollyhock through her panic attack, their first interaction reeks of this:
Pete: So this party's kinda crowded. You wanna go get some air?
Hollyhock: Yeah. But it's pretty cold out.
    Pete: Oh, yeah, that's true.
    Hollyhock: But we're wearing jackets!
    Pete: Also true.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Sarah Lynn's mom taking the last voicemail to her scolding her for everything she ever did to her at face value. Was she genuinely oblivious to the sarcasm, or was she unwilling to verbally face up to the fact that she was one of the reasons why her daughter had such a horrible life and such an early and tragic death?
    • Pete makes out Bojack as a total creep during his story to Hollyhock who “practically forced” him and Maddy to drink alcohol despite how they were completely supportive of the horse buying them some in the first place. Did Pete’s trauma rewrite his memories of that night so he genuinely believed Bojack was completely at fault note , or did he not want to own up to his own bad decisions during Prom Night?
    • Why was Pete worried about revealing the guy was BoJack tp Hollyhock? Was he simply worried that saying bad things about a celebrity could cause him troubles or was he aware of Hollyhock's connection with BoJack?
  • Fanon Discontinuity: If you like the idea of most of the main characters including Bojack arriving at a happy ending, treat the previous episode as the finale. It only goes downhill from here.
    • Cue Fridge Brilliance when you realise the last spoken words of the previous episode were actually a suggestion to treat it like the finale if we want.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Kelsey is advised to not hire Gina for the lead in her movie because she's "difficult". Both women also had BoJack hurting them, intentionally or not. We find out in the Series Finale that Kelsey didn't listen; she hired Gina anyway, and the movie revived both of their careers.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Back in "Escape from L.A.", BoJack bought Penny, Pete and Maddie bourbon cut with water while accompanying them to prom, believing it to be a safer alternative to the vodka mixed with Red Bull that they were already drinking. The teens were supportive of his actions, with Pete even cheering him on. Later, at the dance, Maddie suffers from alcohol poisoning and is rushed to the ER. BoJack leaves after convincing Pete not to tell anyone where Maddie got the bourbon. While BoJack certainly holds a lot of responsibility for what happened, Pete twists him into a horrible monster while recalling the event to Hollyhock. He describes him as a "shitty old dude" who creepily lived in Penny's house and falsely claims that he forced them to drink against their will, refusing to acknowledge his and Maddie's own poor choices that night. The only thing that helps their case is that they were teenagers who didn't know any better.
