  • Adaptation Displacement: The anime is more well-known than the manga.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Daimon, as some viewers are disturbed by his violent and abusive ways and think it's unforgivable, while others find him a complex and interesting Anti-Villain.
    • Sunny is seen by many viewers as the epitome of the useless Tagalong Kid with an annoying voice. Especially evident in early episodes where he's often portrayed as a nuisance and Annoying Younger Sibling. Other see him as an endearing Cheerful Child.
  • Designated Hero: Some of You's interactions with her adoptive brother Sunny make her come across as a Big Sister Bully instead of a Cool Big Sis showing Tough Love, especially the scene where she likely traumatizes him by letting him dangle out of their apartment window.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Old fans completely ignore the 2008 sequel.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Despite mediocre ratings in Japan, the anime achieved a strong level of popularity in several European countries, including Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and Poland. The anime has been rerun several times in Italy since its original broadcast there, and the manga was also released in Italy. The European dubs were reportedly so popular that they inspired many young female viewers in countries where the series aired to join volleyball teams at their own schools.
  • Memetic Mutation: Mila and Kenshironote
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: As mentioned above, the 2008 sequel was not well-received. The main complaints were about You being often Out of Focus as well as her change of personality.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Daimon, especially to modern viewers. Some episodes try to humanize him as an Anti-Villain and show that he's just a strict coach that deep down cares about the players, but it doesn't work condering that his "strict teaching methods" involve physical violence to young girls, and he gets away with everything. In the final episode, we even see him crying because of Nami's accident, but it's not really believable since he spent the entire series treating her like trash (verbally and physically abusing her, manipulating her, and only taking her side when it benefits him). One of the few positive changes of the 2008 sequel is that Daimon is not violent anymore.
  • Values Dissonance: Nowadays, Daimon sure would be arrested for his teaching methods that include abuse (physical and verbal) on the students. To a lesser extent, You's treatment of her little brother would also be seen as more abusive than being an example of tough love with some of her actions towards him bordering on needless cruelty.
  • The Woobie: Nami, the perfect example of Hard Work Hardly Works. She has to put up with Daimon's abuse for the entire series, unlike You who has enough sense to change team (and coach) after the middle school arc. Despite her hard work and good potential, she's the third wheel in the main trio, since You and Eri are seen as the top players and consider each other the main Worthy Opponent. Even in the final arc, she gets sidelined in the national team... by Daimon. And finally, she gets the worst Downer Ending: in the last episode, the day before the Olympic Games, she has an accident that leaves her paralyzed, therefore unable to play in the first important match of the national team.
