"YOLO" is an Adult Swim original series that premiered on August 10th, 2020. The series follows Sarah and Rachel, two Australian girls who love partying, but get caught up in crazy circumstances. Oftentimes, they are followed by a wizard named Lucas the Magnificent, who has a massive crush on Sarah.

The series was renewed for a second season, which was entitled "YOLO Silver Destiny."

Tropes:

  • Adaptational Nice Guy: In the Youtube cartoons Sarah was pretty much a clone of Rachel and participated in the wild shenanigans they get into. In the series proper she's shown to be a nicer woman who does enjoy hard partying, but has a lot more limits than Rachel and frequently seeks for something more fulfilling than partying.
  • Ambiguously Human: Sarah's parents are towering giants who somehow gave birth to the regular-sized Sarah. Strangely Sarah's Nan (the mother of Sarah's Mum) is also regular-sized in 'A Very Extremely Yolo Christmas Reloaded'.
  • Bat People: Appears in 'Highschool Reunion' trying to woo Sarah in order to get revenge on Lucas for letting his girlfriend drown in a role-playing game many years ago.
  • Bridezilla: Sarah's sister becomes one of these as a result of her wedding preparations.
  • The Bus Came Back: Stacy and the Rat Guy from the second youtube short appear in season two in the aptly titled 'Highschool Reunion' episode.
  • Cargo Ship: In-universe, Sarah's ex-boyfriend Brad (actually they had one date) started dating a literal trash bin after their break-up.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: A flashback reveals Sarah's Nan whipped out a shotgun after Sarah complained about wanting to sleep.
Nan: Don't you ever talk back to me.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: When Sarah's sister first appeared in 'A Very Extremely Yolo Christmas Reloaded' she had a different nose and brunette hair.
  • Jerkass Realization: Rachel has a mild one in the Season 1 finale, when she hears Sarah dying of old age, and tearfully admits "I guess I was kind of a toxic bitch" as she's about to die in quicksand.
  • Love Potion: Lucas spends the entirety of Season 2 trying to obtain the ingredients necessary for one of these, wanting Sarah to love him.
  • Manchild: Sarah's dad frequently gets pissed off for little to no reason whenever someone talks to him about anything, even when they're not talking about him.
Sarah's Mom: Oh that's a nice house isn't it Bill.
    Sarah's Dad: What?!
  • Mathematician's Answer: When the guards at Maddison's party ask Rachel to prove she's an actual friend, they request she state when Maddison's birthday really is. After a moment, Rachel answers "Um, today?" The guards realize that's technically correct and let her pass.
  • Meet Cute: How Sarah's parents really met. Her father was playing a slot machine, which his mother tried to play. Instead of getting mad, they decided to play the game together.
  • NEET: Sarah and Rachel don't seem to have jobs. Sarah's still living with her parents while Rachel lives in an actual trash heap. In the season one finale, Sarah's implied to have a job before she starts a lucrative career in pottery in the future where Rachel disappears and in the second season she takes an active interest in gardening while Rachel remains unemployed.
  • Not Hyperbole: Sarah's Nan invites her and a friend to her Christmas cruise, and when Sarah shows up her Nan exclaims "Now I can die happy." She then explodes.
  • Nuns Are Funny: Sister Morrison in that Season 2 opener, who growls that Rachel's a demon (which she accidentally proves accurate when her loogie manages to burn a hole in the grass) and chastises Sarah for having chosen "evil" by continuing to associate with her.
  • Passive Aggressive Combat: The entirety of Rachel and Maddison's interaction at the latter's birthday party is dripping with barely disguised hatred of each other. Rachel's forced smile and trembling voice as she asks how Maddison's been and Maddison blithely asking if Rachel's still friends with Sarah radiates with borderline unhinged energy.
  • Related in the Adaptation: Sarah's Mum was originally from Michael's 'Plasma TV' cartoon where she was the mother of a bunch of rowdy boys who all wanted to kill her.
  • Self-Deprecation: One of the first Adult Swim promos had Sarah's parents watching a video of the show before declaring they hated it. Sarah's dad even freaks out screaming he wanted more Metalocalypse.
Sarah's Dad: What the bloody hell was that shit?
Sarah's Mom: Mm I don't know but it wasn't very funny was it?
  • Shout-Out: Two for The Simpsons, characters resembling Bart and Lisa appears in 'Terry Cup', while the alien that Rachel and Lucas run into has a voice resembling Homer's.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: The Season 1 finale features Rachel seemingly disappearing after wandering into the woods to pee. Which then leads to Sarah making the fairly mundane decision to call the police when she doesn't come back. They investigate for a few weeks before declaring her dead.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: While touched on in Season 1, Season 2 fully spells out that Rachel and Sarah don't have a healthy friendship, and Rachel is holding Sarah back from greater success. However, the two would do anything for each other, and at the end of the season, are able to reconcile.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Maddison pretty much self destructs after Rachel posts a selfie where the former looks rather ugly, leading to her entire citadel collapsing as it's sucked into a black hole.
  • Worthless Treasure Twist: The "priceless inheritance rubies" belonging to Sarah's Nan turn out to actually be prawn heads, much to Rachel's rage.
