Elven is a webcomic by MateKiddleton that started February 12th 2011. While the site claims to be about epic fantasy, it really just stars some roommates, and their struggles to live with each other, and what goes on at school from time to time. The comic pokes fun at MMORPG-type games and a few other things that are either popular or geeky.
According to the website, Elven updates on Saturdays on the main site and on Wednesdays over at Webtoons.
This webcomic provides examples of:
- 24-Hour Armor: Danalach lampshades Cyprien in the comic by commenting that even the LARP'ers at school remove their armor sometimes. Justified in that it can only be unequipped once a day.
- Accidental Innuendo: While Cyprien lists the hazards they face each day, Danalach brings up the Ochre Slime incident. He reacts by saying, "Wait, are you jerking me around?" Her reply is "Someone was."
- Adventure Guild: Argent is an adventure guild governed by a board of directors; the High Templar Grand Master Ysteena Kym is one of those directors. The guild keeps a roster of available quests on computer that adventurers can browse, and dependent upon the skills of the adventurer, they are assigned as requested. Upon completion of The Quest, the adventurer receives skill and experience points immediately, leveling on the spot if qualified. For an unofficial quest, like the one Cyprien's party found in the basement, the adventurer gets a code to take to the guild to register the victory and receive the gold and skill points earned, that are then used to increase character traits, such as Strength, Intelligence, Charisma, etc. Although frowned upon, unofficial quests are still honored. This whole process is overseen by the Guild Auditor, whose job is to see to it that the rules are obeyed, even by the a director. Some times she can be convinced to overlook a minor inconvenience … for a price.
- All Girls Want Bad Boys: Danalach's boyfriend's not good enough to be a roommate, but he's so hot!
- All Witches Have Cats: Danalach tries purchasing a cat so she can experiment with infusion before summoning her actual cat Familiar. She was denied.
- As Long as It Sounds Foreign: The words spoken by Danalach for the incantation cantrip to evoke Fire and Water are Latin, but they don't really form a sentence.
- Ask a Stupid Question...: Tarin gives obvious but uninformative answers to Cyprien's rather gormless questions.
- Bag of Holding: Kauthris equips a Bag of Holding, making it possible to bring an amazing inventory to the Basement quest.
- Boss Battle: After defeating the cannon fodder and then the minions, it's time to face it, the Carrion Crawler Behemoth or the Sword Spider Matriarch or who knows what comes next. Whatever it's called, this one heralds the end of a level and will drop the best loot.
- Buxom Beauty Standard: Cyprien lampshades Danalach by commenting that she's not doing enough to make her boobs look bigger.
- Captain Obvious: Danalach identifies the longsword as … a longsword.
- Catchphrase: "As you wish." Spoken by Danalach's cat-boy familiar after she had given him a command, it is used to denote a willingness to serve. This catch phrase was originally made famous by the movie The Princess Bride.
- Character Level: All of Cyprien's party advanced five levels after the experience points for the Sword Spider Matriarch were doled out.
- Combat Medic: Kauthris is a gun-wielding medical intern studying Pathology. She's quick with the potions when help is needed.
- David Versus Goliath: We all know that underdogs never lose as is shown here, but sometimes, while in training, they get pummeled.
- Distracted by the Sexy: Danalach uses her enhanced attributes to get a discount from the male shopkeeper when she purchases a new laptop.
- Divine Assistance: Cyprien is mortally wounded and is saved from certain death by "…some interested deity granting him hidden passives…" that shields him from attack and saves his life and the lives of his party by destroying the Dungeon Boss.
- Divine Intervention: The housefly possessed by Danalach dies, stranding Dana in her own head. A cleric tries a healing spell … and fails. This is an inversion of the Divine Invervention trope, as the invoked god does not intervene.
- Does This Remind You of Anything?: Danalach relaxes in the afterglow of leveling up.
- Double Entendre: Danalach's deliberately spoken "Someone was." on the face of it sounds innocent, but in context it assumes a sexual subtext.
- Drama Bomb: The four main characters have joined together in a party and are trying to decide on a quest. Tarin states that she knows just the place. She drops the bomb when she says, "The basement." While Cyprien repeats the mantra of the locked door, Tarin becomes inspired and asks for the USB drive the Ochre Jelly had dropped. Turns out it was the basement key in disguise. And so it began…
- Easy Exp: You can get experience from little things like sending an email, or accomplishing mundane tasks, such as grocery shopping or dining at a fast food restaurant. The reward is usually trivial.
- Emerging from the Shadows: Withheld from viewers from so long, Cyprien's face is finally revealed.
- Experience Points: Points earned for killing monsters, or completing quests.
- Expressive Mask: The expression on Cyprien's helm tells the story of what he's thinking and feeling, especially that Fascinating Eyebrow.
- Every Man Has His Price: Tarin gets around Danalach's and Cyprien's concerns about her qualifications as a roommate by making some very attractive offers.
- The Faceless: Characters whose faces remain unseen throughout, sometimes followed by a reveal.
- Cyprien Fairhelm, for most of the webcomic, is shown wearing at least a helmet, and he is later shown with the upper portion of his face occluded.
- Kauthris Paracelsus, the healer of the party, is also one of The Faceless. She appears wearing a variation of the plague doctor's costume which includes the beaked mask that she never appears without.
- Fake Boobs: Danalach give nature a hand … with a pair of old socks.
- Familiar: Dana summons a Familiar, but instead of a cat, she conjures an elven-shaped male cat with a body to die for. It utilizes security measures similar to creating on online account at Build-A-Familiar.com, and it's adaptable to suit any of the user's needs.
- Fantastic Drug: Danalach consumes more mana potions than is normal and staunchly defends her need.
- Fascinating Eyebrow: Cyprien's face is covered by a helmet for a large portion of Elven, so the face plate must take its place. The helm's eyeholes and eyebrows display his state of mind. Other than the first example, there are too many to list.
- Fighter, Mage, Thief: Three of the main characters fulfill the requirements of this trope:
- A Templar squire as the fighter,
- an Evocation mage as the, uh, mage,
- and a High School scamp as the thief.
- A Friend in Need: Danalach is facing her own mortality, and she needs a helping hand; Cyprien is there for her.
- Gag Echo: A throw-away gag or one-liner, meant to be light-hearted, that comes back later now freighted with a deeper meaning. At the beginning of the Basement Quest, Cyprien and Tarin are standing framed in the entry. The following conversation ensues:Cyprien Fairhelm: A slime mould from the shower dropped a secret key to our basement?
Tarin Keynes: We live in a whimsical world.- At the end of the quest, Cyprien redeems the rewards coupon for his party, and the Quest Handler asks about the origin of the quest. The following conversation ensues:
Quest Handler: [darkly suspicious] Was it an old woman in a brown robe looking for mushrooms?
Cyprien Fairhelm: Yes, how did you kn—
Quest Handler: [suddenly cheerful] We live in a whimsical world. - Genius Ditz: Dana may not be the smartest of the bunch, but she can cast spells way above her level. Tarin even calls her an Idiot Savant at one point.
- Gym Bunny: Danalach points out you don't need to be gay to be a Gym Bunny.
- Hand Wave: A kind of dismissive flapping of the hand, as if the topic isn't worth notice. When asked about leaving Cyprien behind, Kauthris offers a hand wave and says, "A mere throwaway suggestion in bygone days of yore. We've all moved on." Cyprien is not amused.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Danalach is in need of a rescue, and Cyprien bravely stands between her and danger, sacrificing himself for her.
- Hit Points: Elven honors the system of hit points first utilized by the creators of Dungeons & Dragons so long ago. You know, before electricity was invented? No, really, I kid. While not as real as say, -dying-, it was a convenient fiction that allowed for a way to indicate just how close to perishing a character was. Zero hit points? Time to check his pockets, and how about those boots? In keeping with this being a reality based on an RPG, the hit points are on display only during quest battles.
- Hot Witch: Danalach is a mage initiate specializing in Fire Magic, and she definitely likes to look sexy.
- I Have Boobs, You Must Obey!: Danalach flirts with the computer store clerk, suggesting he give her a discount on the computer she's planning on buying. He does. He has no choice.
- I'm a Doctor, Not a Placeholder: Tarin Keynes speaks out during a science class at Silverdawn High School.Tarin: How do mages harness dark energy for their spells using nothing but ancient vocal incantations?
Teacher: I'm a science teacher, not a wizard. - Invoked Trope: Danalach, when given the opportunity, finds a way to refer to the Ochre Jelly incident, and the subsequent gooey mess that was generated, hoping that Cyprien would react the way he did, setting him up and invoking an in-universe Accidental Innuendo trope.
- Item Crafting: Kauthris is seen crafting medkits during the fight in the Basement quest.
- Joined Your Party: Tarin becomes a roommate and she joins the party.
- Lampshade Hanging: Danalach calls attention to Cyprien's habit of wearing armor as a way of dealing with the elephant in the room.
- Last-Second Word Swap: Tarin says she may need to hide … erhm … store stuff in the basement. Yeah, that's it.
- Level-Up Fill-Up: Cyprien Fairhelm is hanging on by the proverbial thread, his life's blood spilling out on the floor. Experience Points are being calculated. Suddenly … Level Up! He has achieved another level (several actually), and by doing so, his hit points have been recovered.
- Like Is, Like, a Comma: Dana. Like, Seriously. Occasionally spreads to other characters.
- Loot Boxes: After defeating the Sword Spider Matriarch, Cyprien's party is given loot boxes, one for each. The boxes provide loot that matches the players' characters, although, Kauthris might disagree.
- Lovable Rogue: Tarin is a senior in high school, where she provides ''whatever'' is needed. She is also a talented knife fighter and an expert at looting.
- Magical Gesture: Along with a magical incantation to prepare the spell, Danalach needs to perform a magical gesture to release it.
- Magical Incantation: A magical incantation prepares a spell, and a magical gesture releases it. In this case, Danalach casts Fire Ball and sets fire to her home. She uses another incantation that she finds in her spell book on computer to conjure water in response.
- The Medic: The fourth main character is an intern and medical student who provides medical services to the group.
- Ms. Fanservice: Dana, more so than other female characters. She's the only one to have been shown bare-chested. Repeatedly.
- Non-Player Character: In-Universe, the old woman in a brown robe who shows up in the basement of the group's home is an NPC. The quest handler has heard of her, too, showing she's shown up in more than one quest.
- Not Afraid to Die: When faced with the fact of his impending death, Cyprien tells Danalach to run while he distracts the Sword Spider Matriarch and stalls for time.
- Not What It Looks Like: Cyprien defeats an Ochre Jelly with a make-shift mace while in the shower, leaving gobs of translucent goo all over the bathroom, and his explanation prompts Danalach to reply, "That's What She Said."
- Party Tank: Cyprien is a squire in the Order of the Cyan Cross, training to become a Templar. As a Tank, his skills are devoted more toward defense and less toward offense so he may protect the party.
- Player Character: Elven, despite emulating an RPG, does not have Player Characters simply because the characters are the players. In this world, if the character dies in a dungeon, or even in the street, and there is no arcane save point available, the player dies. Like, seriously.
- Plunder: It's another word for loot or treasure, depending on who owned the plunder prior to the adventure party's arrival. In the Elven Verse, plunder is what you receive for defeating an enemy, a reward for getting the job done. It can be a valuable item, or it could be gold. It could even be junk. It might even be an unrecognized key to an unknown lock. The plunder can be dropped directly from the vanquished foe, it can be delivered via Loot Boxes, thereby extending the suspense of wondering what's in store, or it can be delivered in the form of a coupon to be redeemed at a local guild.
- Point Build System: Cyprien uses the skill points he earned from leveling up to Level 2, and gets a nasty surprise.
- Power Glows: There are times when a potion or effect causes a glow. The comic also lampoons the glow, for instance when Cyprien doesn't understand why the longsword isn't more than a Level 1 Longsword because it glows.
- The Quest: While the Elven Verse behaves like an RPG, it is not in fact a game. This is the elves living their lives in a world where hit points matter, where elves go to college to build up their stats, where dead goblins drop unique shields … where life happens. So, there is no overarching Quest, just living life the best way you know how. Of course, this life here is made up of side quests all over the place, but, well, that's the story, too.
- Racial Face Blindness: Tarin gets by the bouncer with a fake ID, because all elves are look alike, right?
- Random Drop: Somehow a normal sized cockroach can drop a full-sized longsword.
- Respawn Point: Danalach and Cyprien respawn for the first time together during the Basement quest, blood, muck and all.
- The Reveal: The moment Cyprien is restored to Templar class by Ysteena, he is revealed as a Chaotic Guardian, and his upper face makes its first appearance ever in Elven.
- RPG Mechanics 'Verse: The characters speak of gaining experience—some slower than others—by accomplishing the simplest of tasks on up to completing high value quests. They plan excursions into dungeons and join guilds for the purpose of plundering treasure and leveling up. All this while still attending high school, mowing the lawn, cleaning up after a flood, and paying the rent.
- Running Gag: "Like, seriously": As a question or a rhetorical statement, the short phrase is used wherever an emotional response of a sort is called for. Or just because. Other than the first, there are too many examples to list.
- Save Point: A place, usually in a dungeon, where the Player Character can initiate a sequence that will save the player's character progress up to that point. In the Elven Verse the save point is a product of the world, and it resembles a glowing 3.5" computer floppy disk floating above a pedestal.
- Save Scumming: Mentioned as something not done as recorded by the achievement Cyprien unlocked during the Just Another Bug Hunt arc, to wit No Save Scum: for completing a quest without respawning from a save point.
- Schizo Tech: Magic and science coexist, sometimes to the point of absurdity, such as spell-casting instructions on a laptop computer.
- Skill Point Reset: Cyprien is deciding what character traits to increase and selects Charisma by mistake. Frantic, he finds that there's a way to "respec" his stats. The catch is that it costs 50 gold.
- Sesquipedalian Loquaciousness: Kauthris will never utilize a short word when a long one suffices. Or as Dana put it:Who are you, and why do you sound like a thesaurus crawled up your ass and died?
- Spell Book: Danalach keeps her spell book, or grimoire, on her laptop computer, but some, like Grandelf's Grimoire, are in print.
- Statuesque Stunner: Dana is both the tallest and the most … charismatic of the main characters. High Templar Ysteena is also rather tall and, if Cyprien's reactions are anything to go by, also very attractive.
- Team Power Walk: Cyprien's Party take the walk to the cave.
- Terrible Interviewees Montage: Cyprien and Danalach decide they need a new flatmate: Hilarity Ensues.
- That Came Out Wrong: Cyprien explains his fight with the Ochre Jelly to Danalach, then he realizes from her reaction that it came out all wrong.
- That's What She Said: Danalach replies to Cyprien's explanation of the condition of the bathroom saying "That's what she said."
- Things Get Real: Cyprien's party are all Level 2, and they are entering a suspicious cave to begin a quest. Little do they know, it's a Level 10 dungeon, and the creatures they will meet are far beyond anything they have ever encountered. After captures and rescues and battles near to death, against all odds, and with the help of a god, the party survives.
- Tuck and Cover: Cyprien places himself between Danalach and the Sword Spider Matriarch, shielding her body with his.
- Underdogs Never Lose: Cyprien, a Level 2 Fighter, manages to defeat the quest boss against all odds, inspite of it being a Level 10 adversary.
- Understatement: When questioned about her finances, Tarin replies, "I have skills that are highly (wait a Beat) … monetizable.
- They Buy Anything: Cyprien has a stack of junk and he needs gold, so he goes to the Shop to sell it off, where, presumably they will sell it to someone else, because They Sell Everything.
- What Does She See in Him?: Danalach's boyfriend has no redeeming qualities, but she loves the boy anyway.
