Visual Novel / Just Natsuki

Go To

Just Natsuki is a mod for Doki Doki Literature Club! that focuses on Natsuki as a virtual girlfriend, akin to Monika After Story. Taking place after the events of DDLC, the player can spend time with Natsuki by talking with her, exploring her thoughts and feelings, and developing her relationship.

The mod can be downloaded here.

This mod contains the following tropes:

  • Affectionate Gesture to the Head: The player can head-pat Natsuki by selecting the option under the "Extras" tab, then circle the mouse cursor over her forehead.
  • Determinator: Played for Laughs whenever Natsuki gets into a "love war" with the player. Unlike fellow "After-Story" mods which feature their respective Doki Doki girls responding with an "I love you more" until either they or the player concedes, Natsuki is the most persistent in challenging the player's "I love you" with her own, to the point of doing so a hundred times, with no sign of stopping.
  • Existential Horror: Natsuki herself goes through this in the intro, trying to come to terms with the fact that her world is a visual novel, and that a lot of her past, friends, and life problems is just made up. She makes the comparison to having woken up from a nightmare, which typically is reassuring to not have actually happened. But in this case...
Natsuki: How do you wake up from a dream you've been having your whole life?
  • Fear of Thunder: Conversed as the topic "Are you afraid of lightning", to which Natsuki insists she isn't in a huffy manner, though she does know a fair bit about the topic of lightning, and inadvertently admits to calling the sound "a cheap fright". On the opposite end of the conversation, Natsuki asking the same question is cut off by her flashing the screen while clapping her hands.
Natsuki: Well, they don't call it a thunder-clap for nothing!~
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: Natsuki Hates Being Called Cute, yet she seems perfectly okay with the player directly using "Cute" as a chosen nickname for her.
  • Hello, [Insert Name Here]: Like with Monika After Story, this trope comes into play for both the player and for Natsuki as a nickname, typically at higher affection.
    • At the start of the mod, the player can choose their name for Natsuki to address by default, but later at higher affection, another name can be given for Natsuki to call the player on occasion.
    • For Natsuki herself, a nickname can be given that'll display in her dialogue box, so long as the chosen nickname isn't considered offensive.
  • In-Universe Game Clock: The mod is tied to the System Clock on your computer, affecting the lighting outside the window and certain schedule-specific dialogue for Natsuki.
  • No, You: Attempting to nickname Natsuki "Baka" results in her responding solely with this in a joking manner while sporting a smug face.
  • Random Event: Upon boot-up, there's a chance that the player can catch Natsuki doing one of a few activities. Examples of this are;
    • Reading different sets of manga.
    • Trying to code and struggling to understand how, even with a guidebook.
    • Playing a video game before noticing the player and accidentally failing because of it.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Asking Natsuki to be called "Mommy" resulting in her laughing out loud at the audacious (and possibly fetish-y) nickname, questioning the audacity of addressing her like that before accepting it, with her reason being that she has a healthy sense of humor.
  • Static Screw: The mod opens up with flashes of static as the player attempts to restore Natsuki's character file, with the third attempt resulting in a dozen or so seconds of static filling the screen until Natsuki is brought back. Throughout the intro dialogue, Natsuki is occasionally interrupted in this manner, which also seems to cause her physical pain (as it's presumably the restoration continuing to operate in the background and dealing with her gaining self-awareness).
  • Sudden Soundtrack Stop: Upon Natsuki saying "enough" with the creepy music in the background for the intro, it seems to gradually fade out (alongside the static in the windows) in response. Justified, as with how any of the girls in the vanilla game gain awareness and control of the visual novel world when Monika is absent, it's implied that Natsuki has control over world like Monika once did. (This is also a funny moment because it takes her a moment to process what she did, and she admits that it was cool.)
  • Video Game Cruelty Punishment: Attempting to nickname yourself or Natsuki something that offends her will individually add to a strike system. Three strikes across all game sessions will result in Natsuki permanently removing the ability to nickname either yourself or her.
