Trivia / The Brown Man

Go To

  • Adapted Out: In "The Brown Man", three real-life locations in Ireland are mentioned: Munster, Mangerton Mountain, and Mucruss Abbey. "Goule" mentions Munster and Mucruss Abbey too, but leaves out Mangerton Mountain. And that might be because in French, "manger" means "to eat", causing a pun-by-translation that doesn't match the tone "Goule" goes for.
  • Referenced by...: Fellow Irish writer Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu may have taken some inspiration from "The Brown Man" for "The Strange Event in the Life of Schalken the Painter" in 1839. The purchase of the victim by the antagonist resembles purchase of the victim by the antagonist in the former story.
