Trivia / Quake Champions

Go To

  • Ascended Fanfic:
    • Sorlag and Anarki possess passive abilities that mirror the physics from the Game Mod Challenge Pro-Mode Arena (CPMA) first used officially by Quake Live.
    • ztn's classic Blood Run map, originally for Quake and whose popularity skyrocketed in Quake III: Arena and Quake Live is now an official map.
  • Bonus Material:
    • Nyx's "Ruby" costume was available as an AMD promotional item.
    • The "Pulsar" skin was available as an NVIDIA promotional item.
    • The "Twitch Rocket Launcher" skin was available for Twitch Prime members.
    • The "QCON" series of skins are available only to those who log into the game during QuakeCon of each respective year (2017-2023).
  • Canon Name: The backstory for B.J. Blazkowicz reveals that the O.S.A. Director's real name is Joseph D. Hassett.
  • Colbert Bump: Gianni Matragrano, a fan of classic FPS games, announced and later hosted a stream for Quake Champions as a deliberate attempt to cause this. Steam Charts reports that the attempt was somewhat successful, quadrupling the game's active players from a modest average of about 500 to just a bit above 2,000.
  • Duelling Works: Much like the rivalry between Quake III: Arena and Unreal Tournament, Quake Champions was shaping up to repeat history and take on Epic Games' then upcoming Unreal Tournament 4, until Fortnite exploded while Unreal Tournament 4 ended up in Development Hell, leading to its eventual cancellation and shut down on January 2023.
  • Development Gag: The name of the Plasma Gun skin for the Super Nailgun? The Disruptor. There was a cut weapon with this name in Quake II: Ground Zero with a similar model to the Q3 Plasma Gun.
  • God-Created Canon Foreigner: Galena bears the Serpent Riders icon on her armour, which implies that she may have originated from the same universe as the Heretic and Hexen games (which were published by Quake developer id Software). However, because of the copyright disputes between Id and Raven Software, it is unlikely she will ever make a proper debut in that series. Or that Corvus, the Player Character of the aforementioned games, will ever make it into QC.
  • Meme Acknowledgement:
    • The Developer Diaries often display popular videos of the game and comment on them.
    • The Instagib trailer also announces the ability to turn off active abilities "for all you Quakedads out there." "Quakedad" is a term for players of the older Quakes who dislike the changes made to Quake Champions.
  • The Other Darrin: Zigzagged. BJ's voice wasn't Brian Bloom but Richard Neil. The November update, however, brought Brian as the voice of BJ.
  • Pop-Star Composer: Chris Vrenna, of Nine Inch Nails, who worked previously on Doom³ and Quake IV, is the composer of the music for this game, while Andrew Hulshult (responsible for soundtracks to DUSK, Rise of the Triad remake and many others) joins Vrenna with his metal-based score for the game.
  • Refitted for Sequel: One of the original plans for Quake III: Arena, as found on some dev files, was to have character weight classes (just the usual ones: heavy-medium-light). This was finally implemented in Champions as part of the Champion schtick.
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: The reason we're not getting Corvus or any of the other established characters from Heretic and Hexen in QC anytime soon. Unless Raven Software decides to lend the rights to those characters to id Software (which is becoming possible due to Microsoft purchasing Activision Blizzard, the parent company of Raven), fans will just have to settle for Galena to be their representative for the series.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • According to Word of God, Champions was initially thought as an expansion for Quake Live.
    • Tim Willits, before he left id Software, wanted to include The Dragonborn as a playable champion. However, Bethesda Softworks turned him down.
    • In-game files reveal that several more Champions were in the works before active development on the game, viewable here.
      • UI graphics depict untextured models of newcomer Beastmaster and Quake 3's Xaero.
      • Placeholder character announcer callouts include the names of several Quake 3 veterans (Crash, Daemia, Hunter, Klesk, Orbb, Uriel and Xaero), a few original champions ( Beastmaster, Ingrid, Unumrey), an early name for Eisen (Terada) and a couple of crossover characters ( Commander Keen, Raine).
