Trivia / Porter Robinson

Go To

  • Artist Disillusionment: He doesn't exactly hate it, but Porter has consciously distanced himself from his Electro House roots before Worlds, having found that the EDM scene during the early-mid 2010's became too over-the-top and artistically unchallenging for what he wanted to make, and feeling like that had he stayed in with genre conventions, the introspective, aesthetically divergent tones of Worlds he wanted to explore would have greatly suffered.
"At that time I was trying too hard to be cool and to be what I thought a superstar DJ should be. I adopted this rockstar persona – I was trying to be something I wasn’t. Who I was trying to be and who I actually was became too much to bear. I didn’t like my own music, or the music my contemporaries were playing at that point. I didn’t want to play EDM party tunes anymore – I wanted to be more introspective."
  • Channel Hop: Started off with releases on a variety of small boutique electro house labels in his early years as a producer before linking up with OWSLA for the Spitfire EP. "Language" would release on Big Beat Records / Ministry of Sound the next year, while Worlds and its singles would land on Astralwerks and "Shelter" came out through Columbia Records note . Switched to self-releasing for the Virtual Self EP, while nurture would release on indie label Mom + Pop Music.
  • Creator Breakdown: By his own admission, he experienced a bout of depression between 2015 and 2017 that greatly slowed down him making new music (Shelter and Virtual Self notwithstanding), which he attributes the large gap between his first and second albums to.
  • Creator Recovery: nurture is a direct response to Porter's aforementioned Creator Breakdown, partly driven by his insecurities of where to go artistically following Worlds. While nurture retains the highly introspective tone of Worlds, it features a gentler, more life-affirming, and prosperous tone that's just as much a reassurance to himself as it is the audience.
  • Creator's Favorite Episode: In the comments of its music video, Porter lists "Musician" as his favorite song he's ever made.
  • Cross-Dressing Voices: While he's featured female singers on tracks before, including on Worlds, Porter is the sole vocalist throughout nurture, with the "female" voice being his own and pitch-shifted.
  • Manual Misprint: The CD release of nurture has some alternate lines for the song "Musician" in its lyrics booklet. They're from an earlier draft of the song, and the books were printed before the lyrics were changed.
    Final lyrics:
    Then they say, "Fine
Well, do what you need to
But I don't wanna see you wasting your life
Now isn't it time you get a job?"
    Booklet:
    Then you sigh,
“You know I love you, so I think I should tell you, Porter,
This ride: isn’t it time that you get off?”
  • Promoted Fanboy:
    • He's a fan of the BEMANI series and drew some of his inspirations from BEMANI musicians. "Particle Arts" was licensed for beatmania IIDX in 2018, and DanceDance Revolution added two songs from nuture in November 2022. On February 13, 2023, "Eon Break" was added to A3, as an Extra Exclusive song, the first licensed song to do so!
    • Porter also became a fan of League of Legends after being introduced by his fiancé to Arcane, which convinced him that he wanted to collaborate with Riot Games. He was the one to make the offer, suggesting he make a short theme and accompanying animation for the game's "Star Guardian" universe — this came to pass, and "Everything Goes On" was released for the game's 2022 Star Guardian event.
  • Real Song Theme Tune: The first Forza Horizon game prominently used "Language" as its main menu theme.
  • Schedule Slip: When nurture was announced in February 2020, no specific release date beyond "2020" was given. While 3 singles followed throughout the next few months, things became notably quiet until year came and went. "Look at the Sky" was finally released as a fourth single in January 2021, finally confirming that nurture would be released on April 23, 2021. Even the thumbnail for the official lyric video reads out "I'M STILL HERE".
  • Trolling Creator: The Day Porter Robinson Deleted All His Music has a very convincing title and thumbnail… only for the narrator to announce happy 2028, even though the video was uploaded in March 2024. Not only is all of Robinson’s music still uploaded, but at the end of the video, he revealed a new album that would drop soon.
