- Follow the Leader: Memories Of Me, with Billy Crystal and Alan King in the lead roles, and Dad with Ted Danson and Jack Lemmon in the leads.
- Playing Against Type: Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleason were chiefly known for being sitcom leads at the time, while their film roles were similarly wacky.
- Production Posse: Héctor Elizondo, who has appeared in just about every movie Garry Marshall has ever directed, plays Charlie, David's boss.
- Reality Subtext: Much like how David Basner had to cope with his father Max suffering from diabetes, Tom Hanks had to cope with his own father Amos suffering from kidney dysfunction (to the point that Amos had to go on dialysis) during the making of the film.
- Recycled: The Series: A Sitcom adaptation ran on NBC in 1987, with the enviable time slot immediately after Cheers, but failed to catch on and was canceled after a handful of episodes.
- Swan Song: Invoked by Garry Marshall in order to persuade Jackie Gleason to appear in the film. Marshall approached Gleason and basically said "do you really want your final film to have been Smokey and the Bandit Part 3?"
- Tom Hanks Syndrome: Though Tom Hanks still has plenty of funny moments here, this was his first serious dramatic role.
