• Life Imitates Art:
  • Jean Gabin became a landowner in Normandy around the time the film was made, just like his character is.
  • Actor Marc Porel, who played Henri (and Richard Hornig in Ludwig), later became addicted to heroin (his character hides and likely consumes heroin in the film). He died from an overdose in 1983 at age 34.
• Never Work with Children or Animals: According to actor Dominique Zardi in his biography, the cattle massacre with a jeep was of course fake, but the driver (Zardi himself) actually hit a cow who later died. Jean Gabin, himself a cattle baron in Real Life, was sad about this event, because the dead cow was about to give birth.
