Trivia / Edge (Wrestler)

Go To

  • Actor Allusion:
  • Breakup Breakout:
    • Though Christian did pretty well for himself, becoming a Grand Slam Champion shortly after Edge retired - an accomplishment Edge wasn't able to add to his resume due to the European & Hardcore titles being retired. Ultimately subverted when the WWE instituted an updated version of the Grand Slam, with Edge being retroactively awarded the accomplishment.
    • Both he and Christian count as this with regards to The Brood.
  • Creator Breakdown: Downplayed example. While his feud with Matt Hardy is what launched him into one of WWE's most iconic heels, for Edge himself it was not a walk in the park. He has constantly referred to this period as the most stressful of his career, and he coped by channeling the hatred of the fans into making himself a better heel. While it's nothing compared to the forced retirement of Lita or the downward spiral Matt himself would go through in the following six years, it's also clear that Edge was not enjoying himself during that feud.
  • Creative Differences: This is what allegedly led to him being ousted from his own heel Power Stable "The Judgement Day" after just a few weeks. The higher-ups/Creative/what have you, apparently wanted the group to have a more supernatural bent (ironically, not unlike his previous groups, The Brood or Ministry of Darkness) and Edge did not.
  • Follow the Leader: Ever since he originally cashed in his Money In The Bank contract, by taking advantage of the champion already being tired from a previous match note , it's happened just about once a year since then. By now you're pretty safe calling the man with the briefcase the 'champion-in-waiting.' This was even noted by Michael Cole on the 7/22/11 Smackdown. There have been three exceptions to this trend, with the Money In The Bank holder declaring when and where they would cash-in: Rob Van Damnote  at ECW One Night Stand 2006; John Cena at RAW 1000; and Braun Strowman at Hell In A Cell 2018. This was also subverted by Dean Ambrose in 2016, as he told his former Shield comrades Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns that if he won the contract, he was going to cash-in on whoever won the main event of Money in the Bank; which he did, cashing-in the contract immediately after the conclusion of the WWE title match. Originally, Edge’s cash-in was meant to cement his status as a devious heel who would stoop to dubious means to become champion but immediately following his initial cash-in, winners of the briefcase using it as such became such a no-brainer that even faces who won it would use it as such without any heat being put on them (unless it was done against a champion who was another face).
  • Hostility on the Set:
    • Naturally, his friendship with Matt Hardy was destroyed once it was revealed he'd been having an affair with Lita. They later repaired it, but it took several years, and by all accounts they’re not as close as they used to be.
    • The aforementioned affair also did major damage to his friendship with Matt's brother Jeff Hardy, with Jeff being cold to him for several months because of what happened. Eventually, they did manage to overcome it and repair their friendship as well.
    • Amy Weber also revealed an incident where Edge poured a drink over her while she was asleep on a plane, allegedly as punishment for being seen taking Ibuprofen from the men's locker room after she'd got injured.
  • Promoted Fanboy:
    • He attended WrestleMania VI at the SkyDome (now Rogers Centre) in Toronto in 1990, cheering for then-WWF Champion Hulk Hogan in a match against the Ultimate Warrior. It was this match that inspired Adam Copeland to become a wrestler, along with his close friend Jason Reso (Christian), who was also in attendance.
    • Truth on two levels. Twelve years later, not only would he win his first WrestleMania singles match as the Show of Shows returned to the SkyDome at WrestleMania X8, but he would win the WWE World Tag Team Championship with Hogan on a July 2002 episode of Smackdown.
    • Also, in one of his high school yearbooks, he was voted "Most Likely to Win the WWF Championship".
  • Real Life Writes the Plot/Worked Shoot:
    • The Edge/Matt Hardy/Lita Love Triangle in the summer of 2005, which stemmed from Edge & Lita's real-life affair being made public by Hardy earlier in the year. The backlash from fans led to WWE abandoning the Kane & Lita storyline, turning Lita heel & pairing her with Edge, with Kane serving as a surrogate for Hardy until his return to the company.
    • The main reason Edge had to retire: doctor's orders due to injuries suffered over the years.
  • Real Song Theme Tune: Thrice in WWE.
    • From 2002-2004, he used "Never Gonna Stop" by Rob Zombie.
    • From 2004 onward, he uses "Metallingus" by Alter Bridge. This theme also carried over to AEW.
    • During his heel run in 2022, he used "The Other Side" by Alter Bridge, which would later become the theme for his (now former) faction, The Judgment Day.
  • Romance on the Set:
    • Happened infamously with Lita.
    • Subverted recently. He's romantically linked to Beth Phoenix as of late 2012, and the two were in WWE together for a few years but only started a relationship about a year after Edge retired.
  • Star-Making Role:
    • There are actually three categories of this for him.
    • For those cementing him and Christian as a first rate team, we have the ladder match against the Hardy Boyz at No Mercy 1999, and any and all triangle ladder and TLC matches against the Hardyz and The Dudley Boys.
    • For those cementing him as a future singles star, we have his 2002 feud with Kurt Angle and one particularly amazing match on SmackDown against Eddie Guerrero.
    • For those cementing him as a bona fide main event player, we have cashing in the Money in the Bank on John Cena in 2006, his Hardcore match at WrestleMania 22 with Mick Foley, and his feud(s) with The Undertaker and Batista in 2007-2008.
    • And let's make one thing perfectly clear. Those aren't even the whole list. Edge's career has basically been one giant level grind accentuated by star-making roles.
  • What Could Have Been: Edge was originally slated to have a ladder match against Alberto Del Rio at Extreme Rules 2011... but then real life wrote the plot. So Christian got it instead.
    • There were talks within WWE creative for Edge to break the Undertaker’s streak. Edge refused upon being informed, noting that the streak was something special that needed to be maintained for someone that needed to be “made” as a star to break if even then. Edge noted he was already made as a star at that point and thus having him be the one to break it would be a waste. He would later state that he felt Brock breaking the streak was a mistake and that it should have been Roman Reigns to break it.
    • In his biography, Adam states he had a catch phrase for the Brood ("Beware, take care, cause the freaks come out at night"), which he even said once in an on-air interview. However, the Brood split up before he got to start using it frequently.
    • Edge was supposed to retire a year later than when he actually did. It was said that his last match was supposed to be a WrestleMania match against Christian.
    • By his own admission, TNA offered him a contract with a reduced schedule somewhere around 2008, but he turned it down after a lot of consideration. If he hadn't, we could have seen and E&C reunion far earlier, as well as matches against Samoa Joe, Sting and AJ Styles.
    • According to the man himself, Edge was originally set to defeat Triple H for the World Heavyweight Championship at Taboo Tuesday 2004, and the signs were there as well due to him having feuded with the rest of Evolution since his return that year. However, there was a caveat; Triple H's challenger for the show was determined via a legitimate fan vote, and Edge would only be assured his coronation if he got more votes than his competitors, Chris Benoit and Shawn Michaels. Due to the votes being out of their control, Michaels won the poll with a 2% lead over Edge. By his admission, Edge felt angry and disappointed with the result in addition to leftover hurt feelings over being booed in Toronto at that year's Summerslam; as such, this led to him and the creative team pitching that he turn heel - thus kickstarting Edge's long-standing heel run which ended when he turned face a whole 6 years later.
