- Billing Displacement: Willem Dafoe is billed fourth, but only appears onscreen for a few minutes, spending the rest of the film either as a voice on the phone or doing a voiceover.
- California Doubling: Quebec doubles for New Hampshire.
- Creator Couple: Mary Beth Hurt (Lillian) is married to writer-director Paul Schrader.
- Dawson Casting: Wade is 41 in the novel, but Nick Nolte was 56 when the film was made. Glen was 67 in the novel, while James Coburn was 69.
- Dueling Works: Made around the same time as another acclaimed adaptation of a Russell Banks novel, The Sweet Hereafter, but after debuting at the Venice Film Festival in 1997, got its release delayed for a year, possibly to avoid competing with The Sweet Hereafter on the awards circuit.
- Separated-at-Birth Casting: James Coburn, Nick Nolte and Willem Dafoe have enough facial features in common that they're quite plausible as father and sons. Bonus points for Coburn and Nolte both being Nebraska natives.
- Write Who You Know: James Coburn based his performance on his old friend Sam Peckinpah, who famously had anger management and substance abuse issues.
