- The sudden brutal death of Jess. He goes out a hero, shielding a battered woman from her abusive boyfriend who starts shooting, but it's a devastating death, for the audience and for Jess's team. He is the first main character from any of the three FBI shows to die.
- Jess's girlfriend Sarah and his father Byron going to Canada to inform Tali of her father's death. It means Tali is now an orphan.

- The disintegration of Sheryll and Charlotte's marriage. It is strained due to both of their jobs's significant workloads but it's still a shock when Charlotte admits she has developed feelings for someone else and later asks Sheryll for a divorce. Even after Sheryll is shot and Charlotte brings their daughter to visit her in hospital and the estranged couple hold hands, Sheryll reveals in the next episode that they are still divorcing.
