  • Captured on Purpose: With the cannibals closing in and Gabrielle in desperate need of warmth, Xena decides that her best chance of survival is to let the cannibals capture her. She is banking on the fact that they will keep her alive long enough for Xena to devise a plan to rescue her.
  • Climbing the Cliffs of Insanity: Xena tries to climb out of the cliff face of the river bed, but the cannibals knock her down with debris. Xena later does this at night with Gabrielle in tow and is more successful.
    • Lucy Lawless performed the first climb with no harness or support.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: This is the last appearance of Virgil, who disappears without any reason.
  • Dramatic Pause: Gabrielle stops herself from killing a cannibal grunt because she is still distraught over killing Korah. Her hesitation gets her stabbed.
  • Hard-Work Montage: As soon as the sun is up, Xena goes to work chopping down as many trees as she can as well as causing rock slides. By the time the montage ends, it's revealed that she's stopped the waterfall by blocking the river.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: The cannibal tribe the protagonists run into.
  • Inevitable Waterfall: The waterfall is scouted far before the duo get into trouble, but it rears its ugly head throughout the episode. It ends up being the savior of the story as it wipes out the cannibal tribe.
  • Monster Munch: Hosep is barely mentioned by name before he is promptly captured and cooked by the cannibals.
  • Terrain Sculpting: Xena manages to block an entire river with the help of her chakram, sword and a bunch of trees and rocks. The waterfall is completely deprived of water in a matter of hours.
