Recap / X-Men S3 E13 "Savage Land, Strange Heart, Part 2"

Go To

Storm's uncontrollable powers cause Garrok to be freed, and he fuses with the Savage Land's volcano.

  • Accidental Hero: Storm's attempts to attack Garrok just further feed him, but a stray lightning blast hits Sauron. It damages the vines holding him still, allowing him to break free and take on Garrok himself.
  • Big "NO!": Garrok, when Sauron's energy draining begins to derail his plan.
  • The Cameo:
    • Flashbacks to Garrok's origins reveal that he was sealed into the earth by the High Evolutionary.
    • Shanna appears alongside Ka-Zar, when Karl is found at the end of the episode.
  • Chewing the Scenery: Brainwashed and Crazy Storm ends up leaning into this even more than usual. There's also the fully awakened Garrok, who IS the scenery.
  • Evil Feels Good: In the end, Storm admits her rampage actually felt good because it was the first time in years she could let go.
  • Evil vs. Evil: Just as Garrok is fully awakened, Sauron claims enough power to challenge him one-on-one. The struggle leaves Garrok re-imprisoned and Sauron so drained that he turns back into Karl.
  • Flashback: Garrok explains to Sauron how he was defeated and imprisoned by "a powerful enemy" long ago, only being awakened by Storm using her powers in the Savage Land when the X-Men fought Sinister's forces and helped rebuild the area.
  • Friendship Moment: After the fighting is over and Karl is found alive, Ka-Zar gives him some energy and says he can finally put Sauron behind him.
  • Genius Loci: Garrok is the Savage Land, able to materialize his head from a mountain peak, and forming his hands out of the ground to attack our heroes. He can even crush the clay hut where Storm is recuperating, likely because it's made only of materials that came right out of the ground (which is all Garrok.)
  • Godzilla Threshold: Ka-Zar worries about what will happen if Karl drains Storm's energy, but he says the sheer devastation of her rampage means they don't have any other options.
  • Gollum Made Me Do It: Karl Lykos believes he can KO Storm with his own energy drain ability... but it's Sauron who makes him hold on long enough to turn him back into, well, Sauron.
  • Heroic BSoD: Being Brainwashed and Crazy for that long has left Storm messed up, causing her to destroy the Garrok idols. The worst part is, she's not wrong about him...
  • Hope Spot: Karl's plan to stop Storm's rampage by draining her energy is actually working. Then Sauron gains enough strength to assert control and hold on.
  • I Warned You: When Sauron tries to absorb her energy, Rogue warns him that won't work out so well since she also has an absorbing power. Sauron tries, anyway, leading to them both getting a nasty shock.
  • Near-Villain Victory: Garrok's plan to use Storm to break free of his prison and return to his glory days was working like a charm. Storm's attempt to stop him even helps feed him more. It takes Sauron getting free and doing some energy absorbing of his own to stop him. In the end, Garrok bemoans how he was so close to winning.
  • Power Nullifier: Rogue may have been brainwashed by Sauron once, but actually attempting to life-drain her leads to her just absorbing it right back, and even momentarily becoming another Sauron. Eventually she's unharmed, but gets some of Karl's memories for her trouble.
  • Pragmatic Villainy: Sauron takes on Garrok, saying the Savage Land is his to conquer and refusing to let anyone else try.
  • Real After All: Sauron derides Garrok as a myth and tries to sever ties with his priestess Zaladane - but Garrok is strong enough to pull the rug out from under Sauron now.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Apparently the first trip to the Savage Land led to Storm's use of her powers against Mr Sinister and his forces, which also shook up the land enough to awaken Garrok. Whoops.
  • Unwitting Pawn: When explaining the backstory, Garrok tells Sauron he was this to him the moment Zaladane sent Karl off in the ship. The pendant Karl was given compelled him to go to New York and seek out Storm so that Sauron would capture her and return to the Savage Land.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Said word for word by Zaladane, after bringing Storm back to the Savage Land provided the catalyst to fully awaken Garrok.
