Recap / VeggieTales in the House, S1, E4

Go To

Jimmy and Jerry Are Rich: Bob and Larry both desire to get a Monster Truck, but they don't have the money to afford one, until they learn that Jimmy and Jerry Gourd have inherited a supposedly large inheritance. The two friends then endeavor to be nice to the Gourds by helping them out with their chores, in the hopes of being rewarded with a Monster Truck. However, the inheritance that Jimmy and Jerry received turns out to not be what Bob and Larry expected, but they remember that "helping others is its own reward".

Feelin' Hot, Hot, Hot!: It is a cold day in the House, but when Petunia is offered a pair of rabbit fur earmuffs by Junior, it complicates things even further, due to the fact that Petunia is allergic to rabbit fur. On that day, Petunia is to watch the store while Pa is taking a day off from work before Pa warns her not to turn up the thermostat in the store. Unfortunately, Petunia ends up giving in to temptation and turns up the thermostat anyway, which causes a lot of problems for the customers, until she learns a lesson in being truthful about your mistakes.

Tropes found in Jimmy and Jerry Are Rich:

  • "Be Quiet!" Nudge: Bob nudges Larry to get him to be quiet when Larry tries telling Mr. Lunt that they're not interested in buying the truck that he has on sale.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: "Hello, I am calling to inform you of a large inheritance that you have just... inherited."
  • Dripping Disturbance: Bob is taken off guard by the sound of the dripping faucet in Jimmy and Jerry's kitchen while he and Larry are scouting the house for Dust Bunnies.
  • Jaw Drop: Happens to Larry, when he and Bob see the huge Monster Truck that Mr. Lunt has on sale.
  • Killer Rabbit: The Dust Bunny that Bob and Larry find in Jimmy and Jerry's kitchen may look cute and cuddly at first glance, but it's actually revealed to be a vicious little critter that charges forward at its victims before dragging them off into the dark. It's lucky that Bob and Larry were able to escape its wrath.
  • Look Behind You: Happens three times in the episode; the first time, Bob pulls this trick on Larry, telling him that there's a lobster juggling marshmallows, giving him a chance to answer his phone. The second time is when Jimmy also pulls this trick on Jerry when the two brothers try to answer their door, with Jerry even Lampshading it with the line, "You know how much I love finding out what's in other places". The third time, Larry tries to get back at Bob with this trick by telling him that there's a lobster behind him, but it backfires when Bob tells Larry that it's behind him.
  • Musical Chores: "The Chores Song", which is Exactly What It Says on the Tin.
  • Oh, Crap!: This was Bob and Larry's reaction, when they see the Dust Bunny lunge towards them and attack them.
  • Screaming at Squick: A variant, in which Bob and Larry scream when they see the huge mess of dirty dishes and empty sardine cans in Jimmy and Jerry's kitchen.
  • Shout-Out: The scene in which the Dust Bunny attacks Bob and Larry may possibly be a reference to the Rabbit of Caerbannog from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
  • Unexpected Inheritance: Subverted in which Bob receives a call that he and Larry have received a large inheritance, only to realize that the person on the phone dialed a wrong number and that he was actually intending to call Jimmy and Jerry.
  • Worthless Treasure Twist: The inheritance that Jimmy and Jerry have received actually turns out to be a petrified sandwich signed by Phil Vischer, instead of money as Bob and Larry were hoping, much to the latter two's chagrin.

Tropes found in Feelin' Hot, Hot, Hot!:

  • Eat the Camera: Happens at the end of the episode, when Petunia's Bad Side ends up getting the rabbit fur earmuffs placed on her head by Petunia's Good Side, which causes the Bad Side to fly directly into the camera while screaming in agony, her mouth filling up the screen.
  • Flashback: We learn in a flashback that Petunia is allergic to rabbit fur, after she is given a pair of rabbit fur earmuffs by Junior.
  • Good Angel, Bad Angel: Happens to Petunia, with her good side wearing a blue dress and surrounded by a blue aura, while her bad side wears a red dress and is surrounded by a red aura. Parodied later on in the episode when the Good Side also has her own good and bad sides, but the Good Side takes the advice of her good side and tries again in trying to tell Petunia to think about what she's doing.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Petunia says this trope (almost) word-for-word when she realizes that her actions in turning up the heat of the thermostat is causing everyone to suffer from the immense heat.
  • Non Sequitur, *Thud*: "I'll take a five dollar milkshake, hold the milk and hold the shake. Here's five dollars."
  • Remembered Too Late: After Petunia accepts Junior's rabbit fur earmuffs, she suddenly gets an itch, which causes her to remember that she's actually allergic to rabbit fur.
  • Rump Roast: A variation of this trope happens to Larry when he jumps onto one of the shopping carts, but unfortunately, because the heat got turned up all the way in the store, the shopping cart is really hot, which causes the bottom of the cart to leave grill marks on Larry's back and also causing him to run around the store in pain.
  • Shout-Out: The way that Petunia repeatedly scratches herself because she is itchy from wearing the rabbit fur earmuffs that Junior gave her is similar to how Baloo and Mowgli were scratching themselves in Disney's The Jungle Book (1967).
    • During the song that the Good and Bad Sides sing to Petunia, the Good Side sings a line about "letting conscience be your guide", which is a reference to Disney's Pinocchio.
    • Also, fans of Codename: Kids Next Door might also note that this episode takes a couple of elements from the episode "Operation: H.O.T.S.T.U.F.F.", such as a character being warned not to touch the thermostat, and the rising heat causing adverse effects on everyone and everything.
  • Victory Dance: The Good Side does this when Petunia finally admits to Pa that she has a lot of cleaning up to do in the store.
  • Wide Eyes and Shrunken Irises: Happens to Petunia when she realizes that the earmuffs that Junior gave her are made of rabbit fur (which she is allergic to).
