Recap / Transformers: EarthSpark S1E06 "Friends and Family"

Go To

Mo and Robby are nervous about their first day at school. At the same time, the Terrans start behaving strangely and it soon becomes clear that it's not just first-day-jitters.

Tropes:

  • Alpha Bitch: Discussed. Mo is scared of meeting one at school and that fear briefly gets transferred to Thrash, who wonders what exactly a "Mean Girl" is.
  • An Aesop:
    • Caring for a family member who's obviously in some sort of trouble is more important than chasing popularity.
    • Even a close-knit family doesn't have to do everything together. Sometimes you want to do things away from your siblings and that's completely okay.
  • Black Comedy: Bumblebee implying that Soundwave murdered one of his minions while technically drunkā€¦ in front of the elementary school aged kids.
  • Chekhov's Gun: At the start of the episode, Bumblebee attempts to teach the Terrans' trail signs, though they both appear to be too distracted by Robby's and Mo's emotions to pay attention. Thrash later on uses those lessons to lead the Malto kids and Bumblebee on his and Twitch's trail.
  • First Day of School Episode: The episode's A-plot is all about Robby and Mo struggling to fit in at school.
  • Foreshadowing: Bumblebee mentions Soundwave, who appears as the main antagonist in the next episode.
  • Healing Spring: Downplayed. The water in the cave Twitch and Thrash dig out doesn't have any healing qualities, but it acts as fuel for them and brings them back from near-death.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Twitch and Thrash start to behave more and more erratically as the episode goes on, zooming off into random directions and having trouble transforming, as a result of being low on fuel. When they're almost out, they transition into a zombie-like state, where the only thing they care about is locating and getting the water that will re-vitalize them. As if to drill home how far gone they are by that point, Twitch shoots at Robby, Mo and Bumblebee when they unintentionally get in her way.
  • Running Gag: Bumblebee keeps running afoul of a wild racoon, who proceeds to attack him.
  • Sound Off: Played for Laughs. Bumblebee sings a cadence call during one of the Terrans' drills, to which Thrash adds a verse when both him and Twitch trip and fall down. Bumblebee later sings another verse while building targets for target practice. About how difficult it is to come up with verses on the spot.
  • Wham Shot: As Bumblebee's headlights turn away from the writing in the cave, there's a brief shot of a depiction of what seems to be an arachnamech.
