Recap / The Interns S 9 E 7

Go To

Yesterday, using the fact that Gleb was too wasted to do anything, Phil slept with Gleb's new girl, Katia; who knows, maybe it would be a new start for him? He later asks Semyon about the situation (he doesn't know what to do now, when he slept with Gleb's girl behind his back). Lobanov tells him to call Gleb as soon as possible, because the sooner he reveals it, the better. Meanwhile, Polina decides to clean up the on-call room, but accidentally uses Semyon's lucky shirt for it... or, at least, it's what he tells her, in order to force her to buy him a new one. Polina tries to find what Semyon had asked for, but he rejects every single shirt she brings him, stating them to be "not similar enough", to her irritation.

Unfortunately, Polina accidentally angers Gleb, and Phil realises that it's not the best time for that. However, Phil reveals to Polina that she was tricked, and asks her for help with his own problem. When asked why he can't simply tell Gleb as is, he answers that he fears that Gleb would try something similar to Semyon's prank on Polina, only involving girls. Phil almost gathers enough courage to tell Gleb the truth, but Katia suddenly tells Gleb herself via phone. Gleb reacts surprisingly well (it's not the first and not the last girl in his life; who cares), and congratulates Phil on making the best out of situation. Bykov, meanwhile, finds Polina doing nothing, but when he learns about Semyon's prank, sides with her and punishes Lobanov in rather humiliating way — by forcing him to go home in his "lucky" shirt, with people watching over him.

Olga can barely work due to her pregnancy, but Kupitman (who acts suspiciously friendly) offers his help. Bykov learns about this situation, and calls Olga out on trusting Kupitman, especially in something money-related. Olga warns Kisegach to not send a report to bank yet, and double-check it. Turns out, she already sent it... but they still have time to check the copies, and warn the bank if there's something wrong. Unfortunately, it's not so easy to work with documents when you're pregnant. They confronts Kupitman, who vehemently denies all accusations. They threatens to re-check everything right in front of him... and forces Bykov to do it, who confirms Kupitman's innocence, to everyone's surprise. Unknowingly to them, it was the original plan all along: Kupitman wanted them to think that he's their friend, and reward him with money while sincerely believing that he deserves them — not as much as from stealing, but risk-free and without harm to his reputation.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Blatant Lies: As Gleb points out, anyone even remotely familiar with Semyon would know that his shirt is anything but lucky, and that part about him never being punished with night shifts while wearing it is an utter bullshit (with montage of Bykov punishing him with night shifts, with progressively longer sentences). This prank only worked on Polina due to her being new here. He did this in order to convince her to buy him a new one (and make fun of her in process). In light of this, his claim of it being "in closet" when Polina found it quite likely was a lie as well.
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Lobanov mocks Gleb for becoming wasted so easily that he fell asleep before proceeding to the "most interesting part" with his new girl.
  • Epic Fail: One of Olga's and Kisegach's attempts to re-check Kupitman's work accounting report somehow results in his monthly salary being less than one thousand roubles (~$33 at the time of release).
  • Everyone Has Standards:
    • Kisegach can forgive Kupitman many things, but direct stealing from budget is a one-way ticket out of the hospital. Fortunately, he gets proven innocent.
    • Kupitman himself states it to be a reason why he didn't stole those money: because stealing from pregnant women is too low even for him. Except... he invokes it himself in order to look like a victim; his actual goal was to earn their trust by "disproving" Bykov's suspicions, so they would reward him themselves. It works.
  • Graceful Loser: Gleb reacts surprisingly well to Phil "stealing" his girl... because he was wasted anyway. Gleb never was really attached to her (he knows perfectly well that she was not his first and would not be his last). Instead, he congratulates Phil on making the best out of the situation. He then demands details about their sex.
  • Greedy Jew: When Kupitman suggests to do Olga's job for her (she's hospital's accountant), he quite obviously has selfish motives in mind. Bykov later outright tells Olga so, forcing her and Kisegach to re-check everything. Knowing that they can't do it themselves, they forces Bykov to do it for them. And, to everyone's surprise... Kupitman gets proven innocent in the end! Since stealing from pregnant women is just too low. But then it turns out that this was Kupitman's plan all along, since he was rewarded for being a "good friend"; while the sum isn't big, it's risk-free and doesn't harm his (already bad) reputation.
  • Kick the Dog: Semyon's very mean prank on Polina comes out completely underserved, especially since the previous episode, she threw a party for them. Bykov actually sides with Polina when he learns about it.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: When Bykov learns about the whole story with "lucky shirt", he gives Lobanov two choices: he may go home in his "lucky" shirt (which is now closer to a rag than clothes), or stay here and go cleaning toilets. He choses the first option... and Bykov lets him go, but not before attracting everyone's attention to it.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Even if him stealing from budget ultimately gets disproven, Kupitman still manipulates Kisegach and Olga into giving him more money by convincing them that he's "a good friend", cause they would never suspect a foul play that way.
  • Moving the Goalposts:
    • Semyon sends Polina to buy him a new "lucky shirt", only to reject every single one for various reasons, forcing her to find a new one. He doesn't even need any specific shirt (more so, his original shirt wasn't even "lucky" to begin with), all of this is just to "punish" her. One of the shirts Polina brings is exactly the same as original one... but Lobanov rejects it for not being "lucky enough" due to Bykov shouting on Semyon when he took it in his hands (not even unpacked yet). Fortunately, Phil later reveals the truth to her.
    • When asked by Polina why he can't simply tell Gleb what happened between him and Katia, Phil tells that he fears that Gleb would play the same prank as Lobanov on Polina, only with girls. Cue Imagine Spot which shows how it may work; it's exactly as silly as it sounds.
  • #1 Dime: Lobanov claims that the shirt Polina just ruined is very valuable because it was "lucky", and forces her to find exactly same one. Except, he just blatantly lied to her in order to make fun of her; more so, it wasn't even "lucky", because Semyon was constantly punished while wearing it, as Gleb points out.
  • Poor Communication Kills:
    • Polina accidentally uses Semyon's lucky shirt as a rag because she didn't bother to ask him first (it was in such bad shape, she assumed that he no longer needs it). While Semyon insists that it was in closet, she tells him that she found it in the corner, dirty and with one button missing. Although once she leaves, Semyon reveals to Gleb that it was utter bullshit (only confirming Gleb's suspicions), he just wanted to force her to buy new one (and make fun of her in the process).
    • Polina accidentally drinks from Gleb's coffee mug (again, because she didn't bother to ask), to which he reacts in the same manner as Semyon did about the shirt.
  • Serial Escalation: The montage of Bykov punishing Lobanov with progressively larger amount of consecutive night shifts (with penultimate one being "one month of no-ending night shifts") ultimately ends with him threatening to somehow do that even in the afterlife.
Bykov: You would stay on a night shift! Always would! When you would die, I will find you on the other side and force you to stay on a night shift!
  • That Came Out Wrong: Semyon doesn't react well when Phil asks him about the situation where he just slept with his friend's girl (obviously interpreting it as Phil again reminding him about his old relationship with Olga). Phil realises what he just said, apologises and corrects himself, stating that he meant Gleb's girl.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Phil's version of the previous night's events which he tells to Gleb contradicts the real events; specifically, he omitted the part that he and Katia had sex before she leaved.
  • What Did I Do Last Night?: Gleb was totally wasted during the previous night, and can't remember anything. Phil helpfully reminds him, however flashback to those events contradicts his words.
